I've gotten better over time when it comes to assuming I know the intentions of others, but it sure was a trip to get there. An interesting conversation even outside of the content strictly limited to the videogame space. I honestly have not been keeping close to the pulse of anything gaming journalism related in what must be a decade. It already was looking rough back then, but it's nice to hear about groups like the one your guest belongs to, and just what the current state of things are like now from someone still in the field. I do agree with the value of having more experiences outside of videogames just as a whole since it helps in many fields. Being able to draw points and relate things to other experiences helps you in relating and conveying things to various audiences. I kinda find it personally enriching regardless. That being said, I don't see anything wrong with being more selfish in your writing when it comes to your own experiences because we all come to new works with previous baggage and thus can often leave with very different interpretations or takeaways if you will.

I feel like I’ve gotten better but I feel like every corner I turn I realize I still am doing it lol. I have mixed feelings about KZbinrs a lot of the times I think. Though I feel like there’s often a danger with a lot of creators who try to take on a more journalistic role without really the experience. But maybe it’s how historians would feel about like armature game history videos on KZbin as well lol. Thanks always for listening and sharing your thoughts!

I'm not a fan of generated AI art, but QA testing seems like a perfect use case for AI integration into the workflow. Granted, it'd still have to be given final go overs by a human being. I think AI integration ultimately has its purpose as a tool, but it can easily be abused too. I hope for the best with Koei-Tecmo. Their de-emphasizing of mobile and shift towards AAA is quite the gamble especially when combined with mass hirings. They've traditionally done well in the AA space, but I hope this doesn't mean longer gaps in-between franchise entries. DW Origins is grabbing the eyes of people who would never otherwise look at the series so maybe the extra budget and polish is doing something right. Worth noting that the PC port runs well and isn't an afterthought like what used to be the case with the company. I will say that like with Sega and Ryu ga Gotoku, Koei Tecmo stands to make great use of recycled assets given the kind of entries Dynasty Warriors, Nobunaga's Ambition, and even Atelier all are.
@onecontrollerportplusАй бұрын
Yeah I don't like talking about it personally too much on the show since I don't want to distract from the topic of what there is to be gained by Square Enix bringing it to a game dev conference, but ultimately I do have a lot of concerns about it in terms of what it means for workers on a more mass scale (vs. like disrupting individual industries). But I also am far from an AI or laborforce expert so I don't necessarily want to come on the show and start saying one thing vs. the other. I'm definitely more interested in this dynasty warrior over others. Though a sick part of me will always be interested in checking out the open world one eventually lol.

It makes me so angry that Vinnk has been victim to hate for having a mixed race family and now doesn't want to share his family life with the internet as a result. He's a kind man and a good father. It's really interesting to hear about gaming from the perspective of a parent since none of my friends have kids. The idea of sharing your hobby with your parents also feels like such a foreign concept. The Minecraft story especially was enlightening. The talk about buying games at retail prices solely for the IP also feels like it has an asterisk next to it. For instance, the recent Precure titles being simple minigame collections which aren't even trying new hurts when I reflect on how the series used to have side-scrolling beat 'em ups and a full-on tactics entry too. You kinda have to take what you can get given they mostly get mobile entries. It feels like a sign of the times.
@onecontrollerportplusАй бұрын
Thanks for listening! And yeah the concept of being a parent is incredibly foreign to me lol But I do have a sister so I do have some experience with kids and parental relationships around video games. But yeah Vinnk is kind of on another level of video game passion so I think he's got a ton of interesting insight. Plus I think the flexibility he has is really nice with being able to hop between talking about Minecraft and then being able to play through Xenoblade with his daughter. I wonder if there's any correlation with the target market for older fans being mobile games and such where they can more directly take in large amounts of money, so a switch version might be more targeted directly at kids who they may not trust to be capable enough to do more complicated genres.

I know KONAMI when it comes to e-amusement services via the cards or app. I know it's used for stuff like KONAMI online crane game stuff from what I've observed you are actually required to use paseli to play those crane machines online. Unfortunately it's not just the gambling situation such as Card Connect, E-amusement content, but also having to pay course subscriptions to have certain songs and stuff unlocked for you to play at the arcade. Which areas a lot of companies that use IC card like SEGA don't really have a whole lot of variety of stuff you get behind it. Nonetheless even though the BEMANI sector is also what makes them profit with the BEMANI pro league and symphony events. There's a huge disconnect with the western audience because they don't really advertise their stuff a lot over there, I do think it's also a combination of how much the rhythm game sense in the west has died down. But also I think KONAMI just doesn't want to do a whole lot since they ban foreigners from their stuff a lot.

In general his children enjoy puzzle games the most so you can't go wrong with classics like Puyo Puyo, Tetris, Panel De Pon, and so on. Beginner friendly platformers like Kirby and Mario are easy recommendations. He and his eldest daughter have been playing visual novels together, so that might be a fun activity is your child is a bit older. Visual novels are a fun way to help your child read aloud and problem solve. But ultimately it depends on what your kids are into. I'm also with you I wish FF14 ARR didn't just abandon the design of 1.0, because there was a lot of potential there if it could've been refined. I've never liked their design of something not working and just throwing it in the bin entirely. Basically everything from 1.0, cross classing in ARR, the original design of eureka, constant new relic creation systems that get more and more simplified, jobs getting completely uprooted.. It's just sad that if something is too unique, or provides too much friction, there's a likely chance it'll just be completely abandoned, even if it had potential to be greater than it was.

You’re probably aware, but Shining Tears got an English release. I’ve only played a few of the games myself, and the impression I got is that, with a few exceptions, the newer ones don’t have much of a continuity between them, and just share a vague fantasy setting with some common elements and themes (and by Resonance a lot of those are gone). Shining Force NEO and EXA are pretty straightforward action RPGs (the closest things I know to a jrpg Diablo, save for a Dreamcast game by the same developers). EXA recycles a massive amount of content from NEO, but the stories of the two are entirely unrelated if I’m not mistaken. NEO is a simple story, full of cliches. The voice work is campy, but not in the self aware way (think resident evil1). Idk how much the localization is to blame, but there is some charm to it. EXA tells a more interesting and involved story, and the voice direction is quite good. (Just fyi i didn’t end up finishing either.)

Thanks for your impression! Yeah I've heard very little about the series, so I'm happy to see someone with some grasp on what's going on. I was immensely confused early on lol. I originally played PSO on Dreamcast. My older brother bought it, and I mostly watched him play. I always LOVED the artstyle and the music is some of the most perfect music in a game to me. However, I wasn't super into video games at the time, and I found the game difficult to understand. Fast forward to the Xbox, Xbox Live, and voice chatting...I got super addicted to PSO during that time, made a lot of friends, and people taught me how to be more efficient and play the game well. I should add that me nor my Brother had played PSO online prior to Xbox either, he never subbed to the online until the Xbox. Also, PSO is the first game I ever stayed up all night playing till the morning sun. Now I own every single version of PSO physically, and have bought and played every single sequel or spin off. I even own the Japan only Phantasy Star Nova on the PsVita which at the time when I finished the whole game was only in Japanese since it never got localized. It now has an English fan patch that I am unsure if it's completed, but I know last I looked it translated all the menus to make it easier to play. I listened to this entire podcast and was very surprised that Phantasy Star Zero was never brought up. It's practically a direct sequel to PSO, and only released on the Nintendo DS. The gameplay is near identical to PSO, and even the movement and pacing. There's a few additions like a dodge roll, and limited photon arts, but it a very great game that I wish would get remastered or remade. Also, I feel if you liked the graphical artstyle of PSO, PSZ is the closest a sequel ever got to it given the low graphical capability of the DS. Okay, last thing I'll say because I could type likely 10 books about Phantasy Star Online about why I love it right down the small details, and I don't want to get carried away lol Art style, music, and presentation is part of why I always come back to PSO. I don't think any newer game in the series has come close to any of that except maybe PSZ on DS. I don't like the the series moved away from that original artstyle. The series was always kind of anime, but the original PSO hid it well due to it's lower poly graphics. It is just such a pleasant game. Watching this podcast made me want to boot up my Gamecube and do some more runs. Thanks for this discussion, KZbin randomly recommended it to me on the side, and of course, loving the series as much as I do, I had to listen to 3 people discuss it for 2 hours lol

How players approach the game and what they want out of their experience is really interesting. Personally hunting rare drops feels like work so I'm mainly there just to get all of the story content. The weird thing about comparing communities is just that two people can have wildly varying takeaways based on who they just happen to come across on their journey. Like when I tried FFXIV I did the story mainly solo since they ended up retooling the game to allow you to do that, and people I came across seemed helpful. That being said you would have to be the first person to engage the conversation. Totally willing to try PSO myself at a later date just to fully grasp what the game is like. Glad you enjoyed it! and yeah I'd love to see a remaster and at least with JP voices as an option. Is it a part of a series?

@onecontrollerportplus Well idk for sure about a series per say. But I remember there being a cameo boss which made me think it was a series😂

Yeah it's not apart of a series, but does have a superboss cameo battle from Luminous Arc, the first game the ARF developers ever made

YEAH Arc Rise Fantasia! This is most definitely my favorite Wii title! I haven't played it in a long time. Getting reminded of the game and the details makes me want to play it again to refresh my memory! I did not expect this, but I am glad you enjoyed the game! :D

Interesting to hear someone argue that JRPGs in particular are more closely identified with literature rather than other genres of videogames. I don't know if I would totally agree, but I would argue that characters & plot are by far the most important aspects. To me it'd be in that order, because I'm totally fine with a bog-standard "rescue the princess" or "defeat the demon lord" tale as long as the journey to get there is enjoyable. A strong cast easily does the heavy lifting there, and would even be aided by existing biases from character archetypes/lineages as detailed in Galbraith's writings on the subject. To go back to the earlier topic, I personally find it really hard to really critique or rag on a game. I obviously don't put out videos, so as some nobody I often feel like I'd be raining on someone else's parade which leaves me often saying nothing about games which have certain aspects I find disagreeable. In any case, looking forwards to whatever form that game project takes in the future.

Thanks for watching and the comment! I think you've talked a bit about storytelling before in what felt like a more academic sense; I forget, do you have an education that stuf too? I may be miss remembering lol Maybe it's just getting mixed in with us at one point talking about Japanese story structure vs. western one.
@Josephll645 ай бұрын
@@onecontrollerportplus Well we talked about both topics in the past. I have nothing but the generalized English course you take in college for all career paths. Reading more into the academic side is something more akin to a hobby really. Sates my curiosity for why mediums have developed the way they have over time.

Controls are great but you should get used to combining dpad with L1-R1 movement
@onecontrollerportplus5 ай бұрын
It's been awhile since I played it lol. In my mind I think that's the typical control scheme, but yeah it's definitely a bit clunky compared to modern day games lol. But sometimes that's part of the charm! I love learning a new control scheme sometimes. I also like finding moves, like the side dodge, that can couple as movement options in addition to their original intention as well.

I was always interested in Chaos Rings because of the Media Vision connection, but I thought it was lost media because I assumed it required an online connection. Can you give some slightly more specific examples of how it handles character relationships well? (And I think you forgot to link that video you mentioned at the half way point)

@@PanRhei I think any time you praise story stuff it's real hard to convey how individual story points interact with each other to make something that feels special or unique. It's something I've been thinking a lot more about with Xeno and also hearing other people talk about Trails. So while a lot of the stuff I say may not necessarily individually be interesting or distinct , I think the context, focus and interconnection between these elements do matter. But some spoilers in here for sure. So there are four couples total. The first two I think highlight the dynamic of dislike or hatred between partners and also envying the other couples and individuals who may, surface level wise, appear more aligned with you. But it's all about digging in deeper and finding the core thing that keeps you, and the person you're struggling with, together, to push you though and overcome your issues. One of those first two couples ultimately completely overcomes their internal conflict, but the other, despite coming a really long way, still can't quite overcome it by the end. But it’s nice that they recognize that the damage may never be undone, but they accept what happened and why and move forward. 3rd Couple is kind of interesting since both of them are not who they say they are, one knowingly lying about their identity, with the other having amnesia and not being able to remember. So it’s largely about someone having to put on a face while accept the misdirected love someone has, then ultimately overcoming the deception when it gets out. Another added wrinkle with that relationship is on that is the one with amnesia starts to remember his past self and the love he had before, which results in a jealously story. But instead of manifesting as passive aggressiveness or arguments, it’s much more of an internal struggle as they’re ashamed of how they feel. And in the case of this world, that shame literally makes them a weaker couple in the death game. The last couple is a bit less interesting, and I also am a bit blurry on what happened since my game corrupted before I could finish it and can’t find all the cutscenes online. But one interesting dynamic is that they’re actually with their proper companion, instead it a clone made to be more powerful. And ultimately, despite it basically forsaking the human race, chooses to be with the original weaker one. But part of that dynamic is also the clone still thinks they’re the original as well. So despite I think them knowing pretty early on they’re not their original companion due to the increased power they have, they try to treat them as repsecfully as possible and treating them as their companion even as they die in a fight later. Anyways, yeah idk I feel like this kind of description of events is hard to really convey why it works lol. But maybe that’s a goal in the next year or so; How do you convey how pieces connect with each other to create something powerful even if the invidual pieces can seem uneventful.

@@onecontrollerportplus The books could have made for a really good movie series. But it's clear the studio either didn't have the requisite budget or wasn't willing to spend it. Or spent it wrong. They also made some changes to the fictional tech to modernize it, but the concepts just don't hold up as well this way. For example, in the Stormbreaker book, Alex gets a Gameboy (Color?) instead of a DS. The games are all actual playable games, and if I recall correctly (the book's actually right next to me on my shelf as I write this, but I haven't read it since middle school) this is relevant as the tech mogul Alex is spying on should recognize popular video games of the time. They weren't made from published games, and Alex needed to be able to play them to demonstrate that there wasn't anything fishy about them. But every single cartridge actually was a separate gadget. No Mario Kart or similar real games just for play. This is completely skipped over in the movie, Alex only ever plays Mario Kart DS and it reeks of product placement, and the other cartridges don't really interact with the console much, so the fact that the gadgets are disguised as video games is completely irrelevant in the film. The whole plot point was reduced to what felt like filler, so they could have a scene with this series' take on Q. The movie also treats the Stormbreaker as some full-body anti-gravity VR nonsense the size of a small room instead of a powerful prototype desktop computer intended for mass production. The device looks stupid and makes the villain's plan of getting one into every home just asinine.
