Its Roy Harris alright. His style never evolved. The West Point Band plays it impeccable perfect but it plods along with nothing new out of Harris. I love most of Harris music but this isn't one of them

I am a great fan of the Goldman Band. This particular arrangement, to me, sounds closest to the one from original Goldman Band recordings.

Where are the fifes?
@musicroom5238 Жыл бұрын
At the time that recording was made in the early 2000's, there were no fifes in the Hellcats.

Good job, guys, nice and clean. For the definitive version of "The Fox Hunt", search Maynard Ferguson's scorcher rendition on YT from 1973. When I first heard it, I couldn't believe it was recorded live, it was so flawless at a much faster clip. I was very impressed, and I wasn't even a big fan of Maynard.

It's not French national défilé but "Le Régiment de Sambre et Meuse", a french military march done after the franco-prussian war... it was particularly used from the end of the 19th century to 1918... as it was a revanchist song.... but it is well appreciated that our second oldest ally (behind Scotland) use sometimes our military songs, but ... didn't US medias depicted the french as (always) being cowards ? ... The french march the most used for défilé the 14th of july is "La galette" ... the military march of Saint Cyr (i was tempted to say the french Westpoint, but as Saint Cyr was created the same year and as Westpoint teached the Napoleonic strategies and tactics, and French didn't use any american ones.... lol )

I see he quotes the 7th symphony a lot in this work ( Or is it the other way around?)

The West Point Symphony for Band was commissioned for the West Point Sesquicentennial in 1952.

@@musicroom5238 The 7th was written in 1952 (rev. 1955) he just probably decided to use similar melodies in both works. His violin concerto uses melodies from the 7th too! kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4eZmZdpm5eUqM0 7th symphony

Not only that, the first movement of this symphony sounds like a rewrite of the first movement from his 5th. And then he includes a theme from his 1st!

O'Brien wrote a nicely refined march which easily could stand with the Sousa's and Fillmore's best. You and the West Point Band did it justice despite the audible wind noise in this recording.

A beautiful piece by Mary Howe from the 1920s. As with painting and literature, this work gives us a moment where everything clicked and the composer achieved five minutes of transcending refined music and perfect beauty. (There is a moment of left channel dropout in this stereo recording but it only lasts a short time.)

Yes, I'm almost positive this is the University of Michigan Symphony Band under William D. Revelli. They made the only known published/widely-distributed recording of this piece.
