That "garage with bay doors on it" as county commissioner Jeff Holcomb describes it housed many dedicated volunteer firefighters who protected Hernando Beach since 1975. That "garage" as you call it, was home for many volunteers who spent countless hours training many times a week to perform their duties. That "garage" was manned just about 24 hours a day by volunteers on their spare time. The past Chief of that department was a decorated FDNY ret Lieutenant. I myself was a firefighter on Long Island NY with 19 years of experience before coming to Hernando Beach FD and becoming a fire Lieutenant. So, my point here is don't pass judgement and try to tarnish the fire departments past track record that was impeccable for many years based on what had happened after 2017. You have no idea what that fire department has done in the past or the administration who ran a top notch fire department. Hernando County had always wanted to abolish all volunteer fire departments in the county including Hernando High Point VFD. The county wanted full control of all departments including Spring Hill Fire Rescue, and anyone else they can try and overrule. I am proud to have been part of the "garage" fire department under the past administration. Don't try and destroy 42 years of excellent fire protection for Hernando Beach residents based on what took place after the original administration left and handed it over to the personnel who did it wrong in 2017. Get your facts straight and let the public know some real history about the Hernando Beach Volunteer Fire Department. And be original, you are using Hernando Beach apparatuses, then take "Hernando Beach" off the engines front window and put your own unique logo on it . Your not Hernando Beach and never will be. Respectfully, a retired Lieutenant HBVFD STATION 51 The Beach

No one disputed the past volunteer fire department's dedication and services. It was the 2016-2017 chiefs that mucked it up for the entire community. On the other hand, our community deserved advanced life support, which a volunteer fire department was unable to provide even after pleading with them to come up with a plan. Our community is very happy with the current county run fire department and the professionalism, advanced life support, and the growth, including a remodeled station to keep up with the growth of Hernando Beach. If you want people to know the former history prior to your retirement, why don't you write a book about it and tell the people? Why not make people aware of how the actions of a few ruined a good thing for our community? Even stil Hernando Beach has grown and changed and it will continue to grow and change. People deserve ALS and a fully staffed fire department with EMS services.

@@hernandobeachlife @Diane M Greenwell We had paramedic personal and EMT in the department, with Medic 15 down the road until the county did away with medic 15 service. We also had trained FF1, FF2 EMT's and Paramedics in our department, including many career firefighters/paramedics from Spring Hill Fire Rescue until the county abolished SHFR and would never let their county firefighters volunteer anywhere. We had paramedics from AMR and Medfleet including a few Nurses on our volunteer staff. We never got authorization for ALS because of the proximity of Spring Hill FR and now the Hernando County FR. Like I said, prior to the those "Chiefs" who ruined the department, I never heard one complaint from any Hernando Beach resident about BLS or ALS service with the departments past administration. Yet all I read about and hear is negatively from politicians and residents about the shenanigans that took place in 2017, but never once mention the departments impeccable track record from the past. There's no need to write any books on what residents should already know. Anyone who has lived there for the past 20 years can tell you that the Hernando Beach Volunteers were just as professional as their career counterparts. And if your new to Hernando Beach, ask your neighbors who have had excellent service in the past with HBVFD. Respectfully, I remain

Thank you for these. I grew up in Hernando Beach in the 1970s (Just up Flamingo Blvd from where you are) and these videos take me back. My best friend growing up lived a few doors down from you towards the clubhouse.

Thank you! It makes me feel good to know that someone else is enjoying my pictures. We live in such a beautiful place and sadly we take it for granted. I hope you will get an opportunity to come back someday if only for a visit.

That is so important to be able to go back in time and share with others. Some say Hernando Beach has really changed from what it used to be. I think the whole world has, but we are trying to keep it as old world Florida as possible. If you come back to the area, knock on our door and share a sunset with us.

Thanks very much. Yes, it seems a lot of it has changed, but not too much. I moved from HB to Spring Hill in 1978 or so, and then to Hudson/NPR a year or so later, and then out of state in 1986. My grandmother lived in HB until she got flooded out in the No Name Storm. So many vivid memories riding my bike up and down Flamingo Blvd at 6 years old. There certainly are a lot more houses :)
