Hi All! Currently a Graduate Student in I/O Psychology. Here are a FEW of the PROBLEMS I observed and proposed solutions: Problem 1. Starting without a plan/Not informing people of what will be done with data before starting/Allowing people to disclose their names. Solution: Inform participants of what will be done with data, who will be seeing data (once analyzed), and whether their information is anonymous or not. Participants should be given the right to opt out if they do not want to participate. Additionally, participants SHOULD typically remain anonymous & information should not be shared between them.(Otherwise this is unethical). Problem 2. Letting someone dominate the conversation. Solution: Steer the conversation towards allowing all participants to engage. This might mean having participants take 2 minutes to think about how they feel in regards to juggling grad school, writing down a one-word emotion-based answer, and sharing in the group. Problem 3: The facilitator provides too many personal opinions/agreements/disagreements. Solution: Stay neutral. A Facilitator is only going to bias their data by agreeing/disagreeing since participants might view the facilitator as a "expert" and be swayed to join the facilitator's opinion. Problem 4: Providing instructions WHILE materials are being handed out. Solution: Either wait for everyone to get paper and markers, OR give directions before handing out materials. If a facilitator gives directions during the materials being passed around, it is more likely that the facilitator will receive irrelevant data since people are less likely to pay attention/listen carefully.

Actually, it's quite boring. And an idea of rehearsing the exact words you gonna say is pretty bad.

(coming here from the coursera course too) I know we're supposed to feel like this is an example of ineffective communication because of the formal language, but I think there really is a target market for this kind of presentation format and these types of in-depth can honestly be really helpful. It's not 'an attempt to be professional' the man was literally able to discuss the origin of the pecha kucha, explain how to plan for and make one step by step, and provide us with tips and recommendations all in SEVEN MINUTES! He taught us about pecha kucha through a pecha kucha. This is literally so well done I don't understand what the coursera bro is yapping on about. The only people this format would not work for are people in a rush and people that want to know everything in a 30 second reel lmao All the positive comments only prove how helpful this video was. Thank you, Mr. Marcus!

Agreed. I teach non-native speakers of English about things like presenting etc. One of the aims is to get them to cut their language and content down. An advantage of the form is that those with good English can put more info in, those with weaker English can stick to simple sentences. That said, one guy was supposed to do a Pecha Kucha and ended up doing 20 minutes!!! (Yes, I should have stopped him) "But it's all soo interesting!" he lamented.

This stuff is so simple and yet so difficult - and it costs you hours of your time, especially when having to make a deadline this can be a killer. Thank you for making a short and simple video about it that points right to the solution.
