i know you know this but viper mode is built-in. it gives you pretty good modal editing, and rebinding keys is simple. it saves the overhead of evil and lets you really control what is going on under the hood. i found i didn't use 90% of the stuff that came with doom and others and they are way too opinionated for me so i do some speed improvements, set some sane defaults, and turn off the ui stuff that distracts me.

Cheers - definitely it's worth noting Viper, especially since it's built in as you say 👍I can't believe I forgot about it! I did try it again just now, but because it doesn't have all the Vim keybindings (g C-g, or C-v (visual block mode) etc.), and because some Emacs equivalents to Vim behaviour (e.g. rectangular block mode for visual block, and appending text after a visual block with "A" in vim) aren't quite the same as Vim, it always seems to throw me off unfortunately. So I find it has the same disadvantages as Evil, but the fact you can specify it's integration with Emacs keybindings is really cool. But as always in Emacs, I could probably customise my way around those issues I have with the rebinds you mention but I'd rather keep my configs minimal (either that or I'm just lazy 😆). Thanks again!

Nice yeah exactly! I never even understood it until the end when I looked at the solutions! I only managed to know it must be "Buckingham Palace" at the final stage of the challenge (not knowing how to get it from the pictograms), just because of my thankfully correct educated guess here 🤣
