Can remember what i was doing when i heard this track for the first time. I was sitting at a neighbour's dining table drinking coffee would you believe, and tasting it for the first time. Thus that's what this track reminds me of, the taste of coffee.

One of my favorites when I'm driving on the California highways. The original version by Marlena Shaw is also good. I have a T-shirt that says "The surf gave birth to California Soul ".

Lyrics: Uptown got its hustlers The Bowery got its bums 42nd Street got Big Jim Walker He a pool-shootin’ son of a gun Yeah, he big and dumb as a man can come But he stronger than a country hoss And when the bad folks all get together at night You know they all call Big Jim ”Boss”, just because And they say ”You don't tug on Superman’s cape You don't spit into the wind You don't pull the mask off that old Lone Ranger And you don't mess around with Jim” Well, outta south Alabama come a country boy He said, ”I'm lookin’ for a man named Jim I am a pool-shootin’ boy, my name’s Willie McCoy But down at home they call me Slim Yeah, I'm lookin’ for the king of 42nd Street He drivin’ a drop top Cadillac Last week he took all my money, and it may sound funny But I come to get my money back” And everybody say, ”Jack, don't you You don't tug on Superman’s cape You don't spit into the wind You don't pull the mask off that old Lone Ranger And you don't mess around with Jim” Well, a hush fell over the pool room Jimmy come boppin’ in off the street And when the cuttin’ was done The only part that wasn't bloody Was the soles of the big man's feet, ooh And he was cut in about a hundred places And he was shot in a couple more And you better believe They sung a different kind of story When Big Jim hit the floor, ooh, how they say ”You don't tug on Superman’s cape You don't spit into the wind You don't pull the mask off that old Lone Ranger And you don't mess around with Slim” Yeah, Big Jim got his hat Find out where it's at And it's not hustlin’ people strange to you Even if you do got a two-piece custom-made pool cue Yeah, you don't tug on Superman’s cape You don't spit into the wind You don't pull the mask off that old Lone Ranger And you don't mess around with Slim

Dave Dee was at the motor crash scene where Eddie Cochrane was killed and Gene Vincent was injured. Eddie's girlfriend Sharon Sheely gave Dave Eddie's guitar.

"Originally sung by Dorothy Lamour in the movie The Fleets In." That description seens inaccurate? Originally sung by Bob Eberly with the Jimmy Dorsey orchestra, in 1941. You can find it on youtube. 'The Fleets In" was in 1942. The songs lyrics are actually about Judy Garland, who lyricist Johnny Mercer had a relationship with before her marriage (and again, later!)

This reminds me of a pub we used to go to when on holiday in the Lake District. The pub was called The Greyhound and was in Grisebeck. The track reminds me of the pub because there was a year (1980) when it was on the jukebox and used to be HAMMERED, for the two weeks that we were around the Lakes. We went into the pub about three times in the two weeks and this track came on about five times per visit (on average)

Who was the guitar player on that song? The band and chorus was conducted Joe Lipman, but I can't find anywhere online about that guitar player. My guess is Hank Garland. Those 50s guitar parts sound so cool! This is before the 60s and onward brought on a whole new sound for the electric guitar. 🎸
