Such a beautiful and well researched series on medieval music but singers wearing masks is dreadful to see today as was a not so long ago. I hope people will never do this again, not only it looks stupid but also non scientific. When they sing I just close my eyes...

This video has been up for more than 2 years - and yet my comment here is the first comment! Near the end of the video, there was some discussion of how our awareness of tempus and prolation notation and terminology of the Renn can help us to recognize our own assumptions, etc., even of today's music. Near the beginning of the video, there was discussion of perfect vs imperfect tempus and the major vs minor prolation. From my 2023 perspective, I recognize these as analogs to our combinations of triple vs duple and compound vs simple meters. Today's (or at least of the 1990s) terribly narrow academic codification of music theory (devoid of relevant higher mathematics, fixated upon 12-TET, functional tonality, serialism, Euro-centric, "common practice period"-centric, harmony-centric, counterpoint-and-rhythm-marginalizing, etc.) presents us mostly with such narrow permutations of meter, BUT... once upon a time, either at or before these Renn composers, such ideas were new. The LIVING music theory of today (i.e. not what is mostly taught in universities) really is continuing the lively development of such Renn ideas - for example via so-called "irrational time signatures". To be clear, I do not like the term, "irrational time signatures" because the concept which the term signifies involves only rational (i.e. integer-vs-integer) proportions and not irrational (e.g. pi, square root of 2, etc.) proportions, but the concept is clearly in the vein of the Renn notations explained in this video. Basically, the so-called "irrational time signatures" allow for divisions of the beat by integers with prime factors other than only 2 and 3 WITHOUT having to use tuplet notation. Thus, for example, a 4/5 time signature would have 4 beats per measure, each of which contains 5 of what appear graphically to be our 16th notes - but without the burden of quintuplet notation. This is especially handy when switching between time signatures within a piece - and it broadens the conceptualization of metrical subdivision. Who knows - maybe by the time that global warming kills of half of the world's population, university music departments will begin to recognize this innovation... or maybe not. As things presently stand, only SOME music notation software (unfortunately not, for example, the most popular software, Sibelius) allow for this much overdue metrical notation. Time for 2023 to catch up with the Renn already - and that is not even to say how some of this might relate to non-Euro-centric practices, such as possibly African metrical constructs!

To all the negative comments about the masks they wear, look at the date this video was uploaded - December 19, 2020. The pandemic was still in full swing. If I remember correctly, vaccines weren’t available until Spring 2021. I lost several relatives to COVID during those horrible years - I’m fed up with all the negativity. With or without masks, this performance is GORGEOUS. Thank you for sharing your gift of music.

Thank you for this beautiful, succinct, yet richly detailed introduction to art in the Ars Nova period. I am a first-year B.Mus student, studying via a distance learning model. The history of music modules have been the most challenging of all, with little to no 'human touch' underpinning all that theory. I have particularly enjoyed this video, as well as the video titled, 'The Achievements of Medieval Polyphony' from Chapter 1. It has been greatly helpful for me to deepen my understanding of the medieval motet and its development through the 13th and 14th centuries.

We gotta feel bad for the impact of the pandemic on singers. Don't forget that tragic choir practice where several choir members at one church caught covid and died, due to greater aerosol spread while singing.
