Like this video a lot because it reminds me of all my confusion when I had to buy my first Leica M. It’s so incredible difficult to make the descicion. Dropped my Leica M6 around 1995 out of a window in a Toyota 4X4 in the Namibian desert. 60 km/h. Dusted it off. Some scratches and bumps but worked as before. Leicas are tough. No offence……But when I hear people talk about details - one Leica against the other - well then - I just think of my wonderfull old Leica M6 from 1995 with my Summilux 35mm 1.4 asph. It’s still going strong here in 2024. Almost 30 years later. To all you who wants to own a Leica M of the old fashioned kind. Go buy it. Check it out …..important. But there’s a reason why so many pro photographers use It. You don’t talk about the differences. You are where you are in this video. Now I have the old M6 and a Leica M8.2. I use the old M6. The digital one disturbs me because of the display. I check all the time. The M6 keeps me in the moment. Make me take the picture when I feel it’s there. Very different way to take pictures. Love to all of you - and again - thanks for the video. Kind regards from an old Leica M photographer. Jesper - Denmark

514XL is highly overpriced and it doesn't have manual exposure. Minolta XL401 is the same form factor, has a much better lens and it has manual exposure. I don't get why so many people choose the 514XL while there are better cameras that are the same size and weight but are just better. I have a 514XL so I can compare.

Thanks for sharing your 10-year experience with Leica. The M1 that I used on a microscope in college was my first Leica. I was so impressed with its durability and construction that years after I graduated, I purchased an M6. In addition to the M6, I have owned and used the following rangefinders: Contax G1 35mm Canon Canonet QL17 G-III 35mm Minolta Hi-Matic 9 35mm Argus C-3 35mm Fuji GW670iii medium format Fuji GSW690iii medium format However, the M6 was my personal favorite rangefinder.

Definitely a hard choice with todays pricing buying used or just sinking into a new ma or mp knowing it should not lose value and you could always sell with no loss or very little loss plus have a warranty

I had the beaulieu 4008-zmII. I loved it. A hard to hold but was great when mounted on a tripod. I also had a cheap Sear’s focal super 8 - but it didn’t have much exposure control but the macro feature was nice.

Only 2 cameras are really good Beaulieu 4008 and Leicina Special. This one produces blurry-looking images, the image looks very unprofessional even if you scan in at 6.5k.

M7 has aperture priority which is nice for zone focusing in street photography. M6 is fully manual, so you may need to change speed if light changes while you want to keep aperture setting. If you have time for shooting, M6 is excellent too.

◾All old basic flash units are cheap now, people can't even give them away unless they are something special. Ebay is full of them, and the postage will cost you more than the item. The Viv 125 is not special in that respect. I've got much better ones than that for even cheaper than that. ◾From the body language (3:00), it looks like he uses the camera one-handed. Hence his emphasis on lightness. I'm old school and use both hands, so weight is not made into an issue. ◾The Viv 125 is a totally manual unit, so for every shot you must estimate the distance, consult the dial, and then set camera aperture accordingly. That is slow and not as simple as an auto flash unit, with which you set the aperture just once for a whole session and don't need to estimate distances as long as you keep within a maximum, which will be more than the dimension of a room if you use a unit with more power than a glow-worm. The Sunpak Auto122 for example, but there are hundreds of others. ◾The reason these units are so small and light is that they are feeble. Those heavy old units were heavy because they were more powerful, not because of the "fancy" features. ◾Almost all flash units of the film era used AA batteries. The Viv 125 is not special in that respect. ◾The light going straight towards the subject (6:15) may be all you need to light the subjects, but they will look like prison mugshots. Bounce flash gives softer, kinder lighting, which is the reason for those articulating heads, and also requires more power. ◾It should be pointed out that some these old flashes (almost certainly including the Viv 125) might be OK on old cameras, but their high voltages can damage a modern camera's electronics. Flashes made after about 1985 should be OK, but check.

i actually don't think it's a belt clip. i think it's a pocket clip. the clip probably clings onto the outside of the pocket and the inside of the pocket, then you can "slide" it off when you want to use it. the back of the camera would sit along your leg with the lens facing out. the belt is too lumpy so it would get stuck. imo the only thing to worry about is the weight of the camera either sagging your pants down or bumping into something and it sliding off due to the clip not having enough tension. old cell phones and beepers back in the day were similar. it's like having it in your pocket, but "outside" of your pocket. no idea if any of this actually true, just my thoughts based off the design.

Leica prices for the M6 and M7 are now past $3000+ USD. Personally, for a very similar price, I'd look at a black paint MP instead.

Looks like a Remoclip or one of its imitators. Remoclips have their name lightly engraved on the upturned metal tongue. They were made in the 60s and 70s I think and I have two of them! To unslung them I pull a bit on the upturned tongue to create a bit more clearance for the ISO dial. It’s not a quick draw thing but nice to have if you want your hands free at times.

Hallo Nate. Thank you for this nice Video. I have some Information to ad. At first: the prices are very variable. In a Lab in Germany you pay for 100ft super 8 (inkl. Telecine and scan) round about 155€ thats 177US$. That sounds very high, but the reason is that they charge a basic price for scaning (108$ inkl. scanning 10 min of film) So this is a price for a professional Lab. There are of course cheaper options but I think for 90 bucks per 100ft of film is not easy in germany. 18fps is not the standard for super 8. You are not exactly wrong, It was a standart in the past but there are many cameras from the 80s or probably even older, who can do 24 fps as well. The 35mm Film witch is Hollywood standart, was original shot with 16fps or even handcranked btw. 16mm today is mostly used by amateures but it was invented for television and low-budget filmproductions. So its up to you if you want to call it an amateure-format. So these are some points I want to add. Very sorry for I am not a native speaker. I hope my points didnt sound too critical.
