Hello Charlie… I’ve just watched the 1984 Marathon… Your measured approach to it made sure the Smart person won the Race… I admire you so much for that… So I searched you up on KZbin, and here I am… My wife is an advocate of Holistic Wellbeing… so we’ll Subscribe and watch your videos one by one… All the best Charlie, and much love to you, from Hammersmith, West London.

I grew up in an era where you had 3 meals a day, the largest meal being eaten in the middle of the day, the last meal about 5pm. It never occurred to us that we were ‘fasting’ until breakfast. We didn’t even snack on fruit, fruit tended to be in the form of pudding like an apple crumble with custard. We did have quite a high level of carbs in our diet such as potatoes with our protein and a couple of other vegetables on the side. Yorkshire puddings and dumplings were had to fill us up cheaply, but the quantities we ate were smaller and everything was made from scratch. I think even cooking has become more complicated as we only seem to have chefs to to teach us. I learnt to cook from my mother and grandmother, plus I also had cookery lessons at school which lasted half a day. That came at a price though, because we weren’t taught any science or those other ‘boys’ subjects. Now I’m a lot older, I still eat along those principles. We’re lucky that we have a much wider range of fresh produce to choose from, but I’m also struggling to stop the weight increase which seems to be inevitable as hormones change with age. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I ended up here because I was researching why wild animals don’t get fat. Nice to hear a calm, thoughtful and knowledgeable presentation. I loved the CRAP acronym. But the thing is, I don’t eat CRAP foods and I’m still putting on weight at an alarming rate, ever since osteoarthritis in my hip has stopped me from doing the exercise I loved. 🤷🏻‍♀️

What an video Charlie. I am a supporter of low carb eating and the science behind this. I was advised in the late 80s after having my gallbladder removed to keep to a low fat diet. And my weight has crept up incrementally since then. Despite not eating last amounts of food all feeling particularly hungry. Your video is very easy to understand without too many facts and figures. I find some other low carb supporters have too many facts and figures.

Thank you, Angie. I am glad you liked it. I always try to reach a balance between enough science to be taken seriously but not so much that listeners become overwhelmed. I also like to keep my videos fairly short because most people don't have an hour to just listen to me. The subject of weight loss is sufficiently complicated that I had to do it in four parts.

Thank you Charlie for inspiring so many of us to become more than we thought possible. The first book my running coach told me to read was Last To First and it changed my life by teaching me how to believe in myself as a runner. I soon learnt that you can run all the miles you want as a runner but without that, you will never come close to your potential.

Thanks. It’s a pity more aren’t listening. The evidence is there. You can’t exercise out of a bad diet. Working in a school you see the unfortunate results of this marketing every day.

In today’s papers, journalists are making a big thing about Boris Johnson delaying a ban on ‘buy one get one free’ deals - as if that is going to make a difference. But when I try to tell journalists about what really causes obesity they are not interested.

I’ve just googled national Dietary Guidelines and the NHS Eatwell Guide says we should base meals on potatoes, bread, rice or pasta or other starchy carbohydrates. They talk about a balanced diet but the emphasis seems wrong. Good video Charlie your message is clear carbs are the enemy for most people!

I remember back in the early 80s when this advice first emerged, when the "low fat" fad started and fat was replaced with carbs. That also seems to be when people started to put on weight and T2 diabetes was no longer "late onset" diabetes as it was when I was an NHS radiographer, something people over 60 might get back then if they were unlucky. We hardly knew anyone who was overweight, let alone "obese" back in the 70s before the change in advice occurred!

Thanks Richard. There are other factors, also recommended by the ‘Eatwell Guide’, which make it worse. I explain them in Part 2.
