facinating place- been there twice now. In the mid 1980's it was very much "as it was". Open graves and tumbledown houses. Now its been "tidied" with all the graves sealed. Well worth a visit.

It's amazing to see Matala full of life & so different to when I backpacked around Greece in 1983...& slept in one of the caves on the beach (May 83) It was a very quiet place then, only 3 of us on the beach. A mid 20's Canadian couple & myself at 18yrs old. Clear blue skies & temps in the 80's. Beautiful place...fond memories. I must go back & reminise. Thanks for sharing this.

I spent three weeks in a beautiful old villa in the Chora, overlooking the sea and islands. In the evenings the sky was black velvet with three dimensional stars piercing the darkness. If you laid on your back looking up, you felt as if you were going to fall into eternity. We took a sunset cruise to Skopelos on an old sailing boat managed by a man whose name I can’t at the moment recall, but who had studied at the LSE. It became a moon rise cruise, the most astonishing view of the moon, apparently some distance in from the horizon, a large three dimensional glowing globe. Unforgettable. Maybe somebody can say what the illusion was? We were served with tiny crusts lavished with olive paste, and the local aniseed liqueur, again I can’t remember what they call it on these islands ... but delicious. We were dropped off at Skopelos Harbour and had a splendid evening before the serene journey back over the sea to Alonissos. I remember a tiny yellow green gecko in our villa. My travelling partner was fascinated and insisted on leaving it where it was. It had tiny, spread little feet with suction pads on each toe. This was in late summer 1999. The friend I travelled with, Jenny, died suddenly this spring and I’ll never replace the memories of this amazing holiday I had with her. I was thankful to hear at her funeral how she often spoke to her family of the peace in this place. I’ve returned to Greece many times since but the memory of Alonissos is unique. If Skopelos is a pretty, perfectly maintained island of shining white buildings and immaculate pathways swept daily by proud villagers; a well tended home open to all visitors, then Alonissos is a secret haven of naturally hewn beauty, a quietly hidden and mysterious enchantment only a few can experience. A richly embroidered tapestry, showing signs of wear, with remnants of rich, gold thread fraying away in places to reveal the rich colours beneath. I do not think the islanders really want to share this place. Stay away world and let Alonissos keep itself as it is. Quite seriously, some of the most beautiful and distant places I have ever seen exist in Alonissos. All you can do is sit and stare. I think it drove me slightly mad; or was it when I found my sanity? The prospect of returning to my pressured job in grubby old London depressed me and I never really recovered. Another three years and I walked out. I miss my friend and I wonder if I will ever return to Alonissos and, if so, who would come with me? The silence of Alonissos is more silent than elsewhere, the beauty more beautiful. Perhaps I need to travel alone; but will I find the same Alonissos again?

I was watching videos trying to decide if it's worth visiting alonnisos with my partner during August after years not being able to go on vacation together. The videos were amazing but your comment absolutely convinced me! I really hope that you're an author or something similar! You moved me so much!!
