Slow motion clearly shows a plastic hinge/beam mechanism failure. The piers only thrust outward as a consequence of the beam failure. It should also be noted that after removing the additional pier weight/fixity, the bridge was no longer arch-shaped.

What would be the end conditions at the right side of the bridge (one which is not supported)? How would you model those ends, if modelling in a FEM software?

hello, I don't know if its going to be of any use to you now. But here goes the answer to your question. The mid span (right end as you call it) will not be left unsupported. Either you have a central hinge over there to allow for longitudinal movements and release the moments or you have a stitch concrete which makes the system continuous.

Great video, really well explained! At the end though, when you mention the force couple, wouldn't the pair of spokes not see "equal and opposite forces" but instead they would each be in tension at different magnitudes that would still create a force couple capable of resisting the accelerating spin of the wheel?
