Sometimes bagua videos appear speeded up, folks always think the sets must be done at supernatural speed... set playback to 0.9, that seems about right.

Is there anyway I can speak to Shifu Wang Ping? I need to ask him how many times the form is repeated and if the form is reversed at anytime?

Excellent, smooth, relaxed, continuous movement. Wow. That's what a lifetime of practice gets you. I bet he'd be an amazing breakdancer.

the blade seems to be overly flexible...my Bisento(Gwandao) is more substantial(I do Hung Gune and Okinawan weapons)
@Khrene3 жыл бұрын
It seems that's by design. I would postulate 2 reasons 1) These are demonstration weapons, and are meant to minimize damage even when practicing with force. 2) Judges of the performance may be looking for indicators of that snapping motion. You know what I mean. When someone performs a cut in and with the right motions the entire blade shakes at once and the weapons snap and clap.

If I were to judge this on the same standards I would a bo staff, I would say this guy has lived too long training in a non-combat style. He was not utilizing the full length of his weapon. Again, don't know the logic behind this weapon too well, but I don't imagine it can be that different from a bo. With the bo, it has the quality of being able to extend outward VERY fast with a simple hand change. Most of the hand work here was very slow, and the body of the weapon was always kept very close to the guy's body. There was nothing until near the very end where it extended very far beyond his body.

Many people decades younger than him are walking with a stick if not sitting on a wheelchair. And he performed this as if he was in his 20s. The legs are always moving at the same time as the arms are throughout the form. The martial applications may not have much relevance in today's world, as no army fight with such weapons anymore, but the health benefits especially for the heart are obvious.

This guy makes a great form look so uninspiring ......
@yangchensun55467 жыл бұрын
Why do you say that? I think he made it rather inspiring. I am tempted to learn it but thought it would be better if I learned Baguazhang first before moving on to weapons.

I've done Bagua for nearly 15 years..... I've watched all his videos too...... he seems like a no nonsense sort of master and has an inner toughness to him...... I don't know how to quite put my finger on it..... The actual DVD learning the form is a different thing... he really knows his stuff. But I find him a little blasé when it comes to showing the whole form, like he's just going through the motions or something. His whole body force appears to lacking in the stepping. He ends up plodding around a lot.....

Someone wrote (I can't recall whom it was) that the most beautiful and delightful-to-watch performances are useless, from a martial art POV, while the really effective ones are ugly to watch. So, I thought the creator of Baguazhang would not have many disciples had there been a video of him performing, but he sure can fight. Hahaha. Some people can perform Bagua (and Tai Chi) like a beautiful posture dance, but I doubt they will last 30 seconds inside a ring. Myself, I like to learn the martial applications of the art, so I don't really place too much weight on how beautifully someone does the form. I have done Tai Chi for a good number of years and I am not proud to say that if you want to see how a bear or a gorilla does Tai Chi, you can look for me. Hahaha.

I heard that from another Ba Gua Zhang master, He Jin Bao, of Beijing. He said the same thing about the beautiful looking techniques are generally not useful, but the ugly ones work. That's not a quote. It's just the gist of what he was trying to say about "performance" kung fu and fighting kung fu.@@yangchensun5546
