@JC-em4tx3 ай бұрын
When the caterpillar first burrows into the dirt, you leave them in the dirt for about a week. After that, it is safe to take them out and wait for it to emerge. The timeline for them to emerge depends on your climate.

I found a hornworm cocoon/pupa/what ever!!! I'd like to cate for it u til it emerges and let the moth go. Our kids love bags (for now) and I'd love for at least our 6 year old girl to see this irl. What requirements does it need in its environment? For now I have it in about 5 inches of soil (the soil I found it in) just sitting outside in the shade (found it under a shady tree). Like, can I just put it in a container and keep it the temp/humidity it needs or do I have to keep it in soil?

Hello. So I just used the coconut husk shavings as a bedding and then I placed papertowel over the top. Make sure to keep the paper towel lightly damp so the cocoon doesn't dry out. In nature, the hornworm burries under the dirt to help incubate. Hope this helps out. Good luck!

My hornworm has been in a chrysalis for about 3-4 months now..he was wiggling but a week ago he stopped moving? There’s no color change or anything but when I touch him he just doesn’t move..is he dead? He’s a darkish brown color?
@jparker18263 жыл бұрын
Hello. It's hard to say really. The time frame and color are pretty normal. It may be about time to come out or the poor thing didn't make the transition. If the worm died, the chrysalis casing may become soft and soggy like. I would say give it a little more time before making a final decision. Fingers crossed 🤞

@@RickSanchez-3792 Yes, it's how the generation for the next year is born. If the caterpillars are kept in cooler temperatures by the time they pupate, they will think it's winter and stay in the ground for 6-8 months until it becomes warm again.

Hello. Yes, the pupae should be in a dark place with some moisture. You can just use paper towels, one underneath and one on top. I used some coconut husk bedding I bought from the pet store. The best habitat for the moth would be a butterfly cage. They will need nectar to drink after they transform into the moth. Have fun.

I have one right now it a got it as a baby and raised it now that the pupa it made hatched I am taking care of the moth because the wings were messed up when it hatched and if it doesnt eat dont worry because they only eat a night because they are nocturnal and there body prevents them from using there eyesight in the day to look for food.

Yes the estimated time in the chrysalis is 20 days but could take longer. I’m waiting for my fat hornworm caterpillar to get to that stage and I’ve had him for about 30 days now. And he was already 1 inch long, now he’s 4 inches. He stop moving and eating for 3 days so I thought it was starting then he just began eating again. Idk what’s going on.

@eastcoastfiretrucks1837 Жыл бұрын
@@TaylorFamFarmSounds like yours overwintered! Manduca sexta (along with many other lepidoptera species) go through 1-2 generations per year depending on location. Often times the first generation will emerge from the pupa within 7-21 days, but the second (or whichever generation ends up going through diapause) will end up overwintering in the pupa until the following spring, which often takes around 6-8 months.
