I have learned that using omni mics really reduces the sensitivity to wind compared to directional mics. I'm lucky enough to have a pair of Shure KSM141 mics that can be switched between cardioid and omnidirectional, so I use the omni setting for these outdoor clips. Fran

Sadly, it's now been 20 years since I had to move back to the mainland. - My HOME was Kailua. I lived 5 minutes away from Lanikai Beach. I'd go walking on the beach every evening after I got home from work. .. I'd attend 12 step meetings on Saturday mornings at Lanikai Beach. .. Even Halloween in Kailua was celebrated "Island style." - Hearing and watching you play makes me so homesick, yet it reconnects me to what I had become, .."An island girl with Island respect and values. - Mahalo Nui Loa Fran for keeping the tradition of Island Style music alive. It draws me away from the harshness of the mainland, opening the channel to "resurrect" my inner Aloha.. - Namaste

I feel very sympathetic to folks who have had to leave Hawai`i, especially those who know the pleasures of the windward side like you do. It's changed of course, but hopefully as you can tell from our clip the heart of it, the joy of it is still there. Fran

Why no cover of the song "Pupu A ʻO ʻEwa"? It's such a beautiful Melody! I had it in my head for ages before I ever figured out what song it came from. Of course I found Pearly Shells first, but I don't think the melody is exactly the same as with the Hawaiian lyrics. Is it copyrighted or unpopular in Hawaii? Please do a cover, instrumental or with Hawaiian lyrics, if you can. Your music sounds heavenly!

Eh Ken, any particelular favorite among your Martins? Or maybe, which one was the worst. My first Martin was one of the dreadful 70s dreadnaughts built with the damaged jig that placed the bridge in the wrong location - it would simply never play in tune. Check out the slack key rabbit hole. It is amazing. This is a good one to subscribe to for starters. Lots of great older songs here as well that are definitely worth the listen too. If you can "experience" slack key it is better than listening too it in my opinion. Let me try to explain. I used to live in West Maui. We would go to Napili Kai Beach Resort frequently. Once a week some Masters of slack key would put on a concert. Hearing this music, while watching the sun set between Molokai and Lanai is as close to heaven I have experience in my lifetime!
