Its cuz for some reason the idiots at nintendo decided that items hitting you are decided by if they hit you on your screen, this is good, what isnt good is that items that other players are holding hit you if they hit on THEIR screen, meaning you can be no where near them and get hit by nothing

they are a lot of creators how have videos/shorts for improvement in this game. Shortcat is a popular one as he has A LOT of tutorials for different tracks, the best combos, and improving in the game as a whole. I would check him out :D
