Nicely put together with great timeline explanation, never knew the southern cross had a market before it, bought my first coins for my coin collection from the southern cross coin exchange, now that is gone too. 1980s. Keep up the good work. Much appreciated

I wasn't around when it still functioned, but only went to the same site when there was a ten pin bowling alley behind the Southern Cross Hotel, which was pretty ordinary and a way to waste some time before a show started at the cinemas !

Some great aerial shots of the Bourke St area I had not seen before. My dad remembers going to the Eastern Market in the 40s and 50s. There was a stall that sold old off-cuts of 35mm films for kids to use in their home toy projectors.

Grew up just up the hill on Hardy St and have watched the station deteriorate dramatically since we moved out in 2003. As kids we used to pry the cover off the well to jump across it and throw stones down it and climbed that tree many times.

that thing at 5:35 is likely to be a well. i saw one at a rich man's house in serpells road ivanhoe many years ago. and i saw the remains of one in a tip i worked in. i took a lot of the bricks from it and used them at my house. the bricklayers layed the bricks in a spiral pattern then dug out the dirt within the circle and the brick cylinder slid down into the hole. then they laid more bricks then dug out the hole and sunk the brick cylinder some more. this was repeated until it was deep enough. dunolly is an important freight rail town. its pronounced as dunn olly as in lolly.

@PaxAlotin , that is a potential alternative. it would be awkward building it compared to how they built a well but it could be as you say. i'll go back a watch the video again to see if it is near the toilets.
@vsvnrg3263
@vsvnrg3263 3 күн бұрын
@PaxAlotin , both wells i knew of were bottle-shaped. if it was a bottle-shaped object sitting above ground it could have had another use like a brick or pottery kiln. difficult but within the skill range of good 19th century bricklayers. the broken bottle-shaped object i saw when working in a tip came from under the ground in st. kilda where they were building a high-rise office block in 1984. they got rid of it before any heritage people found out about it. st. kilda was within the water supply area of yan yean reservoir which was built in 1864. so i figure that dated the well for well before that date.

The halls were awesome. Up until covid, they were incredibly busy. They did servicing, repairs, plumbing supplies and employed a lot of people including mechanics and apprentices. Covid lockdowns killed the business. It was really tragic for the people who worked there and for the entire town. You’re lucky you got away with filming there without getting charged with trespass. The local police are very vigilant.
@urbanaerialexplorer1885
@urbanaerialexplorer1885 4 күн бұрын
Many have a misunderstanding of trespass legislation and quoting senior police "Anyone has the right to walk up to a front door and knock on the door.” - Where people get in trouble is if they commit criminal damage / steal / do graffiti / dump rubbish / forced entry or break locks to gain entry / fail to leave when told to ... even keep out signs have a limited effect. As for filming, no-one owns what one can see with their eyes or via a camera or drone while out in the open or in public places unless a condition of entry states otherwise (you're technically not allow to take photos or film within the MGC during a public event but they do !) ... These are not my laws or regulations and there are websites that can look into everyone's backyard at least 3-4 times a month and are much better then Google Maps which could be years old ... If you note in all my videos and where possible, I park my vehicle in an extremely obvious location for all to see, have a decal stating my youtube channel and that I am a drone pilot which surprising gets locals coming over and having a chat - often on how to start their own channel or a little history about what I'm looking at - any negative engagement only comes in these messages, which is fine ... I also encourage anyone and everyone to approach me for a chat if they feel uncomfortable with my presence and I'm happy to explain what my intentions are and welcome them to note my licence plate number or take a photo of me !

I am the owner of this site The site is being redeveloped and will reopen early next year. This is not an abandoned Petrol station as mentioned It has been closed only to undergo major redevelopment Country sites undertaking major redevelopment take some time to coordinate and we thank the locals for there patience We ask that everyone stay off the property for your own safety and resist forceful entry onto the site We have taken necessary measures to safe guard the public form entry onto the site so please don’t force entry. I always advocate no-one to force entry, do any damage / vandalise or take anything, report suspicious activity and go away with only images, leaving only your footprints. If it appears occupied or in the process of renovations then step back. Be reassured if it does open, the residents that approached me will be overjoyed and would even seek employment if there is any. Noting the residents that approached me or stopped by in their vehicles to make sure I was only there with a camera; which speaks highly for the locals that look out for each other - The next video will be the railway station and once again locals gave me some history and were just reassuring themselves that I wasn't a teenager or person about to do no good - I always condone locals to make themselves present if a stranger is about especially in towns, as rural crime is a major issue throughout Australia and I myself have come across on many occasions (in the act) of illegal dumping of waste on private and public land - With the tip being to record the licence number and if possible a photo via your phone discretely. !

Interesting video. The Australian Army has never been given the Royal prefix. The Royal prefix designates the defence of the State as is the case with the RAN and RAAF. The Army defends the people of Australia. It is a significant and profound difference embedded in the constitution as additional protection of the civil populace from a potential usurper as happened in 1930s Germany.

In my era trains that went TO Serviceton wouldn't need refreshment rooms. Those that went on to Adelaide did so in the middle of the night. I can remember breakfast at Murray Bridge going to Adelaide and at Ballarat coming from Adelaide. But nowhere in between. Not being in airconditioned carriages I spent a lot of the night with my head out the window observing all those strange stations that we passed along the way. Although on the way back I had my sleeping bag and lay along the luggage rack in our compartment. One of us on the floor and one on each seat and one on each luggage rack. Ah the joys of travelling.

Just a quick note : This location would be an ideal place to have some coin-operated machines (hub) for water, soft drinks, snacks and even souvenirs; This would help generate some funds for the shire (council) community or entrepreneur and the print of free information brochures near the entrance ... many rural country towns without a general store could also benefit with a multi coin-operated machine hub that included bicycle parts (puncture kits etc) if they have a rail-trail or even mobile phone accessories that often get broken ... Even locals might purchase items too with things like milk and bread or items with a 2 week shelf life (power for refrigerated items and cctv would be needed and a supplier that comes past every week or two) !

definately not sandstone. the bricks appear to be calcium silicate bricks called calsil in wa. they used to be common but i dont think they are available anymore. they tolerate alkaline water getting sprayed on them but not acidic water which causes them to rot. they are just made of white sand and cement. they were a very cheap way to build your own house once apon a time. you bought molds and made your own bricks. there used to be more but now only a couple of houses built out of home made bricks in my area. there was a company making them as well. i had a job there for a few days 30 years ago stacking bricks.
