There’s a house on my way to work that has these in the yard. I always admired how pretty the leaves looked and I could never figure out what species of plant it was through google image search. I didn’t realize it had purple flowers on it until today; they must have just bloomed. That made it so much easier to figure out what plant this was and now I can purchase one! Thanks for teaching us how to take care of it and make more of them!

How fast do the seeds germinate, is it too late in the season to start in Zone 7B? Also, I take it you just toss the seeds on soil and that's it? Thank you
@redsoilgardener6 күн бұрын
Hi they germinate very quickly. I usually take a seed tray and sprinkle the seeds. I leave the seedlings in the tray until they are ready to move into a small plastic pot and gradually into a bigger pot. Once the leaves look sturdy enough you can then slowly introduce it into your garden. However, you could toss them in the soil and keep an eye on them. Some of the ones i had, did self seed and they popped up around the mother plant. So either method works.

@@redsoilgardener I got a whole bunch from a neighbor, and she she also gave me seeds. I made the mistake of leaving the rosettes in rain, and I think some perished from too much water. But some still look good, and I have the seeds. They don't do so well in bright shade/dappled sun, eh? The front of the house faces SW, the back NE and I was hoping to try back there. Maybe the seeds. Thank you so much.

I have one that I planted a couple of years ago. 1) it’s not blooming and 2) can I cut it back to make a shrub
@redsoilgardener11 күн бұрын
Yes, as the flowers form at the tip of the branches, by pruning it, the shrub will become bushier and produce more blooms. From every branch you cut, two branches will form meaning more flowers forming at the tip of the branch.

We too have red soil here in the state of Maharashtra, India. I like your videos. Could you please share the composition of the well-draining soil in the propagation tray with the list of ingredients and approximate proportions so I can try making it at home. Thank you.
@redsoilgardener11 күн бұрын
Hi sorry for late response. and thank you for following my channel. With the Gasteria I did a well draining mix. I try to avoid using Red soil on its own as i find it gets compact when dry and it retains a lot of water similar to clay. I do make my own potting soil where I mix red soil in my compost heap so that I add organic matter. Try 2 parts potting soil ( this you should be a well draining potting soil) 2 parts coarse sand or grit 1 part pumice. One could substitute perlite instead of pumice. Once you mix the ingredients fill a pot with the mix and check when you water the mix, the water runs through the drainage holes.

@@redsoilgardener super helpful. Thank you so much.. agree that red soil is too dense for succulent roots and needs massive amendments, which makes no sense..better to avoid, I guess

Why my canna produce brown tips and edges but they are glowering
@redsoilgardener16 күн бұрын
When you get brown edging and tips could a result of under watering or overwatering. Cannas are thirsty plants and you are experiencing a hot summer make sure you water the soil around the Canna roots. Overwatering could result in mushy roots, but I don't think it's that as your plants seems happy and flowering. Just in case, check the underside of the leaves, just incase it's pests. They love hiding. if there is nothing then we can eliminate that.

I am a garden center merchandiser. I feel bad selling cannas with rust on them when it comes that way from the farm. They won't let us treat them. I bought a few and tested with fungicide at home..all of the rust went away! New blooms are on and plant is thriving. Thank you Goddess!
@redsoilgardener17 күн бұрын
Hi, rust attack spreads really fast. I use Neem as it is organic but one must repeat the application every two weeks. With Rust you have to ensure that you allow circulation by pruning some of the foliage. Also is to water the soil and try to avoid water on the leaves. Great that your plant is doing well and have blooms. Enjoy your plant and Happy gardening.

Alice, what zone do you grow your lovely plants? ❤️
@redsoilgardener17 күн бұрын
HI Denise,I live in Nairobi, Kenya which is basically almost bang on the equator. We have two hot seasons and two rainy seasons. Alot of the flowering plants were bought in from South African and some trees like the Jacaranda tree from South African. We also have equal days and nighttime all year around and we are above 1800 m above see level.

Thank u from India.....These dried flowers can be used as seeds?
@redsoilgardener16 күн бұрын
Yes you can. Once the flower is spent and the petals fall off, allow the seed head to dry. You can actually allow the seed head to dry on the plant. Once dried, open up the seed head and you will have your seeds.
