A Pogue death shouldn’t have happened so soon and shouldn’t have been handled so carelessly. If JJ had to die, then sure. I think people would have accepted it, but this was not the way to write what was supposed to be a meaningful death. Revenge isn’t why I watched this show, but now with that as a focus in s5, I’m not sure if OBX is going to have the same dynamic and I’m not sure how they’ll wrap up the series as a whole, not just the revenge plot line.

Honestly in my opinion, i think if they were going to kill JJ off it should’ve been in a more noble manner. Like when he dove in to save Sarah, or they could’ve had him stay back to fight off mercenaries to buy more time for the rest of the group. I just think him dying by the hands of a character that JUST got introduced this season was not good writing.

As I enjoyed Season 4 of OBX, I agree that some of the creative choices weren't substantial. Rafe should've been killed off upon making up with Sarah. That would've successfully set the stage for Season 5, which stands to reason why it will be the final season. In addition, Cleo's vendetta with that henchmen was a major missed opportunity as I hoped she would avenge Terrance's death. Instead, she was robbed of this opportunity when she was wounded, and it was given to Pope. The henchmen could've wounded Pope, and that would've set Cleo up to take him out with the only shot she had left. Furthermore, the audience can see that the writers have decided to sink their own ship since JJ was killed off. I would like to have seen him not be bad at life in general. This should've been the season where he matures into being a better man than Luke and Groff put together. Instead, he ruined everything he touched and was murdered by his own father, who murdered his mother and left him with Luke, who was an abusive drug addict. It can be argued that Rafe would have been redeemed by stopping Groff from killing JJ after everything he put him and everyone else through. That would've successfully tied his story arc, therefore setting the stage for Season 5. Instead, here we are. What's left of the Pogues is seemingly a quest for vengeance apart from OBX. For all intents and purposes, Poguelandia is no more. There is no OBX without JJ. I guess we'll see what happens when the final season is released in late 2025 or early 2026.

it just felt so arbitrary to kill him off in the last seven minutes of the finale. not to mention he was in a foreign country, killed by the same man that was introduced this season, and on top of that, buried in a desert they will never see again. it felt like an essay that was procrastinated until the very last minute.

I agree with your hot take about ending in season 3. I honestly thought that before the show aired like why are we continuing. I’m excited about 4 but like why. I the part of season 4 episode 1 where they set up Poguelandia should have been added to season 3 instead of the set up for Blackbeard and end it there . I enjoyed this season but like you I had a lot of issues with it. A lot of people seemed to be acting out of character. The Pogue v Kook felt forced Tooper didn’t seem like he wanted to bother the pogues. Honestly the “Kooks” were acting more like pogues than the Pogues in their conflicts. I liked your point about JJ and Kie breaking up I think instead of it being for them deciding to stay friends it could have more been Kie saying I love you but I can’t be with you anymore until your are a little less impulsive so figure your shit out and hopefully we can be together again down the road. I think their dynamic would have worked better because they could have been friends but both wanting more kind of. I will never forgive them for the Pope assaulting the cop it doesn’t make sense especially when Kies dad does few episodes later and as far as we know he is fine. One of my take aways from this season is if you name isn’t John B and the season focuses on you death may be at your door. Finally I will be watching season 5 only to see Groff die. What petty man kills his son because he didn’t give him the rope. Him saying that line when he killed it was why I hate that scene.

Regardless of all the flaws and plot holes the show is pure entertainment and suspense there was no second where i was bored or not engaged and i think this is what the show good

The way JJ hated kooks but he was so trusting of Groff over and over again was a huge plot hole to me. If he’s going to be this rebellious anti-everything and everyone except pogues, they should’ve gone all the way.

The second they released those first 9 minutes of part 1 I knew JJ was going to be on my sh*t list this season and unfortunately 10 episodes later nothing changed that opinion

I don't like that john b is not the main character anymore, cause it feels so different,like s5 will be about jj again,but this time he is dead. Kiara is probably gonna be the main character trying to revenge jj. And all of this has lead to john b not being the main character(wixh is good in a sence that he can rest after everything he's been through in the past seasons)but him not having the development he deserves bothers me. Pope has the best character development in my opinion,next to sarah. Jj went completely backwards and kie I don't even know what she did this season besides waiting for jj the entire time. I like when characters get a good development, and i have seen it in kie and john b but it's not as good as it could be. Maybe this is not that important for some people but for me it's 😅i didn't mention cleo cause i believe she doesn't need character development, but we need to know her more. It's been 3 season with her and we barely know something. Anyways, can't wait to see what they will do in s5, I'm scared.

No, seriously, as someone for whom Outer Banks hit this sweet spot between nostalgia for carefree childhood/teenage years and a comforting feeling of watching a fairy tale about a bunch of social outcasts with golden hearts triumphing over adversity at every turn, I don't remember ever being so annoyed by the writing of a relatively good, fun show (of course the standards of "prestige TV" don't apply here). In my vast viewing and reading experience, I've never seen writers destroying an important and inspiring character arc so mindlessly and clumsily. Personally I barely recognize JJ from previous seasons. In seasons 1-3 he, despite all of his antics, often behaved like a much more emotionally intelligent and mature person than John B or even Pope. Up to this point, he has been learning to open up more emotionally (season 1), he realized that he had a real family after all, even after being dealt a crappy hand of cards in life (season 2), and, finally, after some confusion, he saw that he actually had a chance of growing into an adult, being in a steady relationship and actually doing something with his life (season 3). After coming up with so many dumb plans in the previous seasons, he actually manages to skillfully pull one off to save Kie from a wilderness camp! He’s actually capable of doing that! That’s a real growth right there. Channeling destructive into productive. In season 4, he’s basically throwing all of his lessons away in one impressive swoop. After desperately wanting all throughout season 3 to have a stab at adulting, he suddenly becomes this Joker archetype - unhinged, emotionally closed off, stubborn and immature (he actually reproaches his old friend for being too responsible and behaving too much like an adult at one point, which really came out of nowhere if you ask me). All throughout this season his character is snapping at his friends for no reason, going in circles, repeating the same mistakes over and over again (as though his slow but steady growth in previous seasons didn't exist) and, which is the worst thing out of all, learning that his horrible family history will always be his fate. It's like a curse that have always been hanging over him, no matter what he did. It's a pretty terrifying message actually. And all of that just to artificially make his death inevitable and drive home a point about the value of loyalty and true friendship, which ultimately felt chillingly hollow... Really?!😖It's like seasons 1-3 and season 4 are two completely different shows... To add insult to injury, because of Jiara the writers obliterated Kie's character arc along the way (which makes the whole thing even worse considering that the next season will be basically her season). It was only logical for a tough love friend who was constantly challenging JJ to do better (we had a whole damn season of her making him apologize for the wallet he stole from her dad after all!) transforming into a tough love partner that he actually needed. Instead, we get an uncharacteristically weak, diluted version of her character who’s constantly forced to meekly follow his antics and catch up with him on his path of self-destruction. This strange and inconsistent characterization leads to one of the most ridiculous and unconvincing scenes of the whole season, when JJ is mindlessly drinking on the boat and behaving like an immature brat, while Kiara pretends that his character doesn’t exist. I can’t possibly imagine not only somebody who has been in an 18 month (!) relationship but actually Kiara from previous seasons to simply stand aside and watch in this situation. There’re countless examples of such weird inconsistences in how the characters interact with each other all throughout this season. The more I think about it, the more gaps are staring at me right back - and the problem is precisely in the character-writing, which is at the core of this show. Some commenters justify all of this by the importance of raising takes. Well, following the same logic, JK Rowling should have killed Ron Weasly or Hermione Granger to make the stakes real. Raising stakes for the sake of what exactly? To turn this show into a Shakespearean drama? And as a writer myself I don't think that fans wishing for a magical Blue Crown to bring JJ back are delusional. All of this writing mess can only be justified if the show is ready to step up and finally embrace the fact that it's been a fairy tale from the start, that it's amazing at what it does but ever so slightly ridiculous. For example, with all of the talk in town about exploring the relationship between Rafe and "dark" Kiara, I would 100% watch a storyline in which JJ bravely travels from the underworld to prevent this from happening🙃 However, after reading the interviews with creators I got an impression that they're taking their show a little bit too seriously... I really want to be proven wrong! Because if a serious, high stakes drama is what this show is now aspiring to, I don't think that these writers are up to the task... They should have stayed in their lane.

They rush from one place to another, someone finds his dad, they talk about the treasure and everything during the whole season, but getting there just in the last two episodes, a main character dies at the end of the season etc. Writers should really change their mind cuz its getting worse and worse

I agree season 3 should have been the last one. This one was a stretch. JJ annoyed me the entire season. Blowing all their money, the random crash out scene, smh. It was no reason for his dad to stab him either. I also hate that they had a black kid tackling that cop and I hated his parents' reaction even more. And I need the Kooks to relax, like they're too old for that atp lol

Agreed Season 3 was a great way to end the series. I didn't like how they killed JJ. I felt the writing to give Luke the baby seemed strange. Why leave another loose end in Luke? They made Groff a serial killer yet he left his infant son alive to only kill him later. The baby story line limits the time jumps they can do. I thought Rafe was the smartest character this season. With JJ gone, he will play the wild card next season. I feel Luke will kill Groff in the end. This show has the dads (no mattter how the dad's acted before) showing up big to protect the kids. What about the cop letting the kids chase Groff? He knew how dangerous he was. One question, in episode 6, Luke yells after JJ that there is more he has to tell him. Was it that Luke had made a deal to take back the property? Or something else?
