Although I have relatives in Florence as a retired person my choice to purchase a house is in the south, perhaps the region of Molise, or Abruzzo. Grew up in a small town in US, and spent a couple decades as a adult living in small town. Like to know the merchants and they recognize you as a repeat customer. Would avoid the large and even medium size cities where one is anonymous.

I'd like to leave the US not because of Trump, I voted for him, but because how the Democrats ruined this country. And though I voted for Trump the third time, I don't think he will be able to " Make America Great Again ". The US is way too ruined to be turned around. We don't have anything made here that any country would want to buy. China makes everything the world needs and sell them for much cheaper. America is rotting. Its nice there are still hopeful citizens that the US can stand up again. But when you don't have a steel industry, no car manufacturing industry, no food production industry, no retail industry, millions of jobless, millions of drug addicts, millions of criminals, millions of the populace angry and disenfranchised.....the US will fracture and disintegrate.

It’s not just Trump. People have been saying defeat Trump so everything can go back to normal. Normal is gone at this point because rational people have given up. It is the radical right wing movement in its entirety that is the issue. We have a ridiculous two party system where one side is openly advocating for racist, misogynistic policies that take us back in time and remove rights and safety from women, children and anyone who is not a wealthy, white, cis gender, hetero-monogamous, Christian man. The other party is too busy fighting themselves and playing within the rules and boundaries the other side doesn’t give two craps about. Republicans will say the left needs to play by the rules but burn the rule book as soon as they get the chance. These right leaning policies have been advancing for decades. Starting with the creation of the military industrial complex. The uncapped potential of big business and their ability to influence politics on both sides. The influence of dark money taking the power out of the hands of the people. The misreading and propping up of the constitution which lead to the misinterpretation of the second amendment creating a fun crisis that has lead other countries to put us on a list of countries to use caution when visiting. Not to mention being on the list for hate crimes against foreigners and the LGBTQ+. Nixon and Reagan then crushed small business with unregulated capitalism which lead to corporate monopolies and an ever increasing wage gap and leap in poverty and wild inflation. The otherizing of people who look and live differently than us as recently as the 90s through today. This didn’t happen yesterday. We have been brainwashed by corporate media like Fox News for decades and now some of us don’t know any better and obviously many of us have actually joined their ranks. People who know what was going to happen welcomed and wanted these hateful, damaging and discriminatory policies. The saddest part isn’t that Trumpism has won. It’s that we want it. That we like it. We have become that which we used to hate. We have now given up so much of the peoples power that the elite have shifted their attention to dismantling the system, stacking the courts and departments with loyalists, and taking over local governments. The guard rails have been removed. Those who think there is anything standing in the way of Republicans doing whatever they want at this point is kidding themselves. The only ones that even had any hope of saving us was the Supreme Court, and you see where that got us. They are complicit in the whole thing. Trump getting in to power only entrenches the neo-fascist rule for at least the next century if the rules still somewhat stay in tact. Which seems highly unlikely. Trump didn’t start this movement, he is finishing it.

You’re trivializing and dismissing the concerns of many about the consequences of Trump’s election as president. It’s not a simple matter of waiting out his term for four years. I know you said you no longer follow US politics, but you can’t be so oblivious that you don’t get that what happens in US politics affects the entire world-or maybe you are. Anyway, this was a rather irritating episode to listen to because of your general attitude.

The only reason I’m still hanging on is because I’ve already gone through so much in the process of applying for nationality, that now I might as well bite the bullet until I finally get it. I would’ve left a while ago, probably to Spain… just saying, it’s not for everyone and the best advice here is to spend time in the places of your choice before making a definitive decision.

British people and Europeans in general have built in bullshit detectors because of our histories of dealing with totalitarian regimens. They naturally have a healthy distain for people in power regardless of what ideology they promote. Donald Trump would never be elected in any European country because we can see he's just a conman and moron. European countries have been destroyed by people like him so we are naturally wary of the charismatic leader type.

Rafael just a comment- things change- so B/C OF BREXIT I was told on the ground in a European country that schools are really having a hard time getting British English teachers thus...THEY ARE MORE open to any native speaker ie. U.S. for example. Just want to give folks hope....And yes not sure that they will "sponser" but you will get a job, maybe multiple schools!
@BEYONDDIVORCE9 күн бұрын
They don't want Native English speakers taking those teacher jobs. After Brexit over 50,000 young Italians came back to Italy because they had to chose one to be resident in. So they mostly all came back to mama and to no Jobs! So guess what, they decided to call themselves mother tongue English (having lived in London for six months) so the whole job market for actual Native English teachers dried up. They will advertise for a mother tongue teacher and yet they will employ an Italian (who claim they are now English) it's impossible to find a teaching position that pays enough to rent an apartment. Save yourself the pain of finding out later. P.S. a TEFL certificate is worthless. Don't come to Italy if you need to work!! Come if you're rich and retired.

When people talk about income minimums and requirements for living abroad, is this before or after taxes? That can make quite a difference, I would think. On another note, isn't the currency conversion a problem for anyone with an income from a foreign source (especially retirees)? Even with dual citizenship, the conversion is still an issue, no?
@ellenharrison95024 күн бұрын
I live primary off my USA social Security. Its deposited directly into my US Wells Fargo account. I then remove it by Spanish ATM (do NOT accept the offer by ATM to do the conversion for you its a horrible rate) Wells Fargo will give you a very good rate + a $5 charge. So take out a large amount each time. Then I deposit that cash € amount into my Spanish bank. You can have direct deposit into any Spanish bank but I have to return to the USA to set it up which I have not done in many years. You will need a NIE (SS#) number to open a Spanish bank account. To get a NIE you will need to show long term visa acceptance.

It is of course perfectly natural to assume that everyone else is having a far more exciting time than you. Human beings, for instance, have a phrase that describes this phenomenon, ‘The other man’s grass is always greener.’ The Shaltanac race of Broopkidren 13 had a similar phrase, but since their planet is somewhat eccentric, botanically speaking, the best they could manage was, ‘The other Shaltanac's joopleberry shrub is always a more mauvy shade of pinky-russet.’ And so the expression soon fell into disuse, and the Shaltanacs had little option but to become terribly happy and contented with their lot, much to the surprise of everyone else in the Galaxy who had not realized that the best way not to be unhappy is not to have a word for it.
