Just like they were in Chicago back in the day I was a huge XTC fan when I saw them play in the late 70s. They opened with REEL BY REEL although it was the Black Sea tour they play much old stuff

I think this might just be a different mix than the album version. Comparing this and the studio recording side by side, the vocals sound pretty identical. The only real vocal difference I noticed is that at 2:57, leading into the chorus, he gives an ad-lib of "whoah, come on now!" where in the studio version the equivalent ad-lib at 3:05 is more of a rhythmic "c'mon, c'mon now!". So who knows, maybe Partridge and the band were such consummate professionals that they really did give a perfect performance for the radio. It's hard to say, just listening to a lo-fi recording of a broadcast where everything's flattened to mono and comparing it to a higher fidelity stereo studio recording. But I suspect that this was just a broadcast of an earlier mix using an alternate vocal take, rather than a perfect painstakingly arranged & practiced live performance of a song otherwise never performed live.

Dave Gregory's guitar solo on this studio-live version is the best of any of them. They are dragging the beat a bit compared to other live versions on KZbin, so that probably helps. There's a number of videos where they rip this song so fast, you can't believe the drummer survived!

It's the guy that writes the hits That gets the money In this funny old world of pop The bassist and the drummer might be lucky They never seem to get a lot You start out high school buddies And swear allegiance for all time But when the checks come rolling in It's cash or I resign But the duffest tune a band can play And even the nightingales despair It's the sound of a lawyers doorbell That rings in Berkeley Square Ring out High school buddies Allegiance for all time Comrades of pop turn away In love and war all is fair A far worse fate awaits you On carpets made from human hair Good Night
