Even though we have lots of strings for free, they don’t cover all my needs, especially harmonics and col legno. For now it’s ok to start, but I really want to get something like areia lite in the future when I’m earning income from my music.

I know this video post is older, but my comment is for those curious of NotePerformer who is not yet convinced. Follow the link here and discover the magic of NotePerformer. I cannot recall any VST sounding like a recording like this. The music in the linked video was produced by Dorico 5.1 Pro driving NotePerformer 4.5.0. (NO affiliation) The music performance can still be tweaked using Dorico's MIDI lanes, but the listener will definitely hear how NotePerformer is not this 'in-between', medium quality VST as some claims. NotePerformer has a lot of power, if one knows how to use its magic! 🙂 kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5ergmiQgpl1l6c

You need to redo this video and use your mod wheel. On sustains you are only using one dynamic layer which is not how a player sounds. Thanks!

In brass and woodwinds 1 dynamic layer works better most of the time, otherwise you get strange crossfading and phase issues

@@AlonsoJoaquinComposer If you're happy to work without swells and decrescendos, I guess. But with the mod wheel stuck at maximum fortissimo (as Eoin has it in the video) sounds terrible to my ears. Leaving it half-way (mf) would be preferable imo.

@@planetqwerty I'm not. Ideally I'd want sampled crescendos, decrescendos, marcatos, tenutos too. But there are some issues with using CC1 as if these were modelled instruments, what you want between mf and ff is not F it's both mf+ff at once. Idk sampled brass and winds are a pain to work with because of crossfades.

@EoinBlunnie4 ай бұрын
Showed it very briefly at 04:01! When using the modulation wheel, it sounded like it was mostly just adding a lowpass filter and lowering the volume - so imo, not as useful as it would be with a string library etc

@@EoinBlunnie The 'dynamic remapping' you link to does not have the same effect as the modulation wheel, which allows you to move through the different sample levels of each note (up to 4, depending on which instrument you've selected.) I think you'll be pleasantly surprised if you have a listen to Markus Junnikkala's demonstration of how Pacific Brass can give you much greater control over dynamics when using the modulation wheel - kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y3WulJp-nKZkbqM (57m 20s in).

Edirol is still the best of any of these. It's like 15 years old but I'm sick of all these libraries that take up an entire HDD. It's what a looooot of the anime composers still use. Some guy in African pop music got me on it since I couldn't figure one of the sounds, it's still widely used in commercial pop music there. He pulled back the curtain lol.

Marking a note staccato in a score (hotkey) is 100x easier and quicker than doing it in a DAW (keyswitch, and back, or switching to another MIDI channel in your template). And it means you can try out different articulations painlessly, and all the notes for the instrument remain in the same part.

Oh 100%. MuseSounds were basically taken from David William Hearn’s sessions he’d intended to create a bespoke Staffpad library for but when Ultimately GTR (MuseScore) acquired Staffpad, these sounds were ported over to it. They work very well especially in the legatos where the note transitions are excellent by and large. Dynamics in the brass are limited but I can’t see BBCsO discovery being better in this regard.

Great to see someone else reviewing this .. I think it's the weakest subscription offering on the market, as you said, you can get just as good or better plugins for free in almost all cases , Reaper exists, and it just smacks of a slapped together offering to try to gouge money from consumers . Also, the decision to only allow 10 nominated plugins for use is terrible.

Why is musescore seen as the "less accessible" software? The only DAW that has an interface that is genuinely intuitive and doesn't look like an early 2000s website that I know of is Logic. They both have their shortcomings in terms of accessibility and I would argue that musescore is much more accessible.

Musescore 4.0 has a very capable soundfont that is, unfortunately, baked into the program. What you hear is what you get, which may be appropriate for focusing solely on bread-and-butter orchestration instead of producing music from beginning to end. Volume automation is indeed one of the program's Achille's heels, but there is another that I've encountered: no true tremolo on the strings. While it should be covering all the bases for "bread and butter" orchestration, the lack of tremolo strings is quite a significant gap in the armor plating. It is a pity that the tremolo is either non-existent or a tempo-based effect instead of a nurtured soundfont source. For the primary purpose of the program, this can be overlooked. However, if Musescore 4 is your only option, then you still have it great! Focusing on what it CAN do will yield great results if your imagination remains in a state of optimism. Personally, I'm a bit spoiled since I'm stuck in the DAW paradigm and even had articulations (such as tremolo) over a decade ago when I had the free "squidfont" orchestral sounds. That being said, I wish that I could snag some the sounds in Musescore 4 and use them within my DAW of choice, but because the soundfonts are truly baked into the program, we're at an impasse (I like the brass sounds in Musescore better than the UVI-Orchestral Suite, for instance).

As someone who's composed using both approaches, I appreciate the level of control you can get with DAWs and VST instruments (which is helpful if the audio itself is the final product, and can also be useful for individual tracks that you can composite over the sound from MuseScore), but I find composing in notation to be far more efficient because you get results without needing to worry about adding in keyswitches or dealing with MIDI clips or tracks. Plus, I am a violist in a community orchestra and tend to write with actual orchestra musicians in mind.
