Arthur thanks you. I have done some really bad grooming on his ears. I have paws and legs looking good. But those ears! I never can tell the difference between ear fur and the head and neck fur around the ears. This makes better sense.

The dog is so well behaved there's no restraints being used. I do understand though. This sweet dog has been well treated and never experienced hair matting or any negative grooming experience. I've watched other groomers from those in shelters to those who pay. I've seen those in shelters being treated very kind but those who pay that were handled rough, but on the other hand, groomers who charge were very kind even to those dogs who supposedly were very reactive, so it varies from groomer to groomer. When a dog trusts you, that dog will comply. I know this is what I see: A well trained, behaved dog who still will be a dog, but will be compliant enough to let the process happen in a positive way ❤

Thank you and yes, this is one of my personal dogs who I have raised from a puppy. She is very used to being groomed and actually enjoys the process. I am also a professional groomer so I deal with many difficult dogs as well. You are exactly right, if they experience dematting and other negative grooming experiences, it’s very difficult to get their trust back. I always do my best to treat them kindly and gently but it’s difficult when they haven’t always been treated that way. If all the dogs I groomed were good girls like Claire, I’d have the best job in the world! 😉

Why do you cut off her whiskers? Seems cruel!!!
@linkridgeshelties7413
@linkridgeshelties7413 Жыл бұрын
Whiskers are removed on show dogs in North America. It’s not cruel and they grow back quickly. It’s completely optional though, unless my dogs are showing I leave them alone. It just provides a cleaner look and almost all dogs in the ring will have it done. I realize this isn’t the case in European show rings so it’s important to know what is considered appropriate in your region. 😊

@XxLuUx
@XxLuUx Жыл бұрын
Actually it's a really bad thing tu cut the whiskers off. Dogs need them to feel the world around them it's like the touch for us. That's also why it's the only time in the video where the dog moves.
@linkridgeshelties7413
@linkridgeshelties7413 Жыл бұрын
It’s done on most show dogs in North America. It doesn’t hurt them and they grow back quickly. It’s entirely up to you if you want to do it though, I can’t imagine a dog would win or loose based on whiskers… I just find it gives the muzzle a cleaner look. 😊

I will never understand the need to take away a dog’s whiskers and tip their ears for aesthetics. They should be respected and appreciated for their natural beauty.
@linkridgeshelties7413
@linkridgeshelties7413 2 жыл бұрын
It’s definitely not a need, just a tutorial on how shelties are presented in the show ring. The breed standard calls for ears to be 2/3 erect with the tips tipped forward. It’s all a part of the correct sheltie expression. This definitely doesn’t mean that shelties that don’t have perfect ears aren’t beautiful as well. Many shelties have ears that do this naturally, some have prick ears, some have floppy ears. They are all beautiful and it only matters if you are wanting to show them. As for whiskers, mine are only trimmed for shows, otherwise they are left alone. I pluck my eyebrows and shave my legs when the occasion calls for it, we all want to look our best when in the spotlight. 😊

Why trim the wiskers???
@linkridgeshelties7413
@linkridgeshelties7413 2 жыл бұрын
Hi teolinek, honestly, it’s purely cosmetic. It makes trimming the muzzle and lip line easier and gives it a cleaner look. It is entirely up to you if you want to do it but most shelties shown in North America will have their whiskers trimmed to show. That being said, if you don’t want to, you absolutely don’t have to. They grow back really quickly when not being shown. 😊

@linkridgeshelties7413
@linkridgeshelties7413 3 жыл бұрын
You absolutely don’t need to do all of this if not going to a dog show. My non show dogs still get their feet and nails done as well as a good bath and blow dry every 4 to 6 weeks to keep their skin and coat healthy. The rest is mostly cosmetic and completely up to you and how much you want to do. 😊

Congrats again on your video series. Just a clarification question. If you have a sable with a white ruff and a softer, silky coat texture like your bi-black that does not stand up easily, you add Kolestral and chalk as normal and then add the Igroom texturizer prior to ratting. You don't add additional Kolestral before adding the white clay magic powder. Correct? Thanks :)
@linkridgeshelties7413
@linkridgeshelties7413 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, usually the chalk and kolesteral are enough but if it needs a bit more help, add the texture powder. If it is very soft, you can add a bit of hairspray at the roots but just be conscious of how it feels, you want it to still feel natural. You’re better off with a natural feeling dog, even if the ruff doesn’t stand up. 😊

Hello! Great video! Was wondering how to trim my sheltie as he’s getting a bit too hairy. Just wondering, (as I’ve read online that dogs whiskers shouldn’t be cut or trimmed) is trimming a dog’s whiskers mandatory, or is it just for aesthetic reasons?
@linkridgeshelties7413

You definitely don’t have to trim whiskers, it’s only done on show dogs and even then completely optional. It gives the muzzle a cleaner look I find but absolutely not necessarily. 😊

You are definitely a great groomer and very agile with the scissors, but I wish I had seen you display a little more love to the poor dog. I kind of get the feeling of watching someone detail a car, and I think you forget sometimes that the dog is alive.

I’m sorry it appeared that way, I think I was just focusing on explaining what I was doing. I edited it down to just the essentials and cut out a lot of parts where I would play with her to keep her happy on the table. These dogs are my life and I promise you they get a tone of love and attention in their normal life. They are my house pets and Claire is normally goofy and playful but takes her grooming very seriously. If you watch till the very end there’s a short clip of her funny side. I will definitely try to include more of that in the future, it’s definitely important that they are enjoy the process too.😊

Wonderful video series. Just 2 questions if you would be so kind. Am I correct that you use the Crown Grooming Powder as the baby power you mix with chalk 50:50? There's been a lot in the news about baby powder & cancer. Secondly after the show do you clean any of the texturizers etc. out of their coat or just let it dissipate? Thanks
@linkridgeshelties7413
@linkridgeshelties7413 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Bob, I actually mostly use a corn starch based baby powder because of those risks, I should have mentioned that in the video. It works just as well. The crown royal power is premixed so you can use it as is. It works great, I just go through so much of it while showing it gets expensive... I do use the Crown Royal, Magic Touch concentrate as a grooming spray. I bath all of my dogs after a show, the products can cause breakage and matting if left in, especially those with a softer coat. Hope that helps, good luck and hopefully we’ll all be back showing soon! 🤞🤞

@@linkridgeshelties7413 Thanks soooo much for the quick and thoughtful reply. Just one follow up question on the 2nd part of your answer above on cleaning dogs after a show. What do you do if you have back to back shows (i.e. Friday/Sunday or Sat/Sunday) or are on the road and bathing is not easy to do. Thanks again for responding. :)

Wondering why the whiskers are cut off?
@linkridgeshelties7413
@linkridgeshelties7413 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Cate, the whiskers are trimmed to give the muzzle a cleaner look. It’s not mandatory and you can leave them on if you prefer. I just find I end up cutting them when trimming the rest of the head so it’s easier to just remove them. They grow back quickly and I leave them when I’m not showing. My dogs all have long whiskers at the moment as we don’t have shows in Canada! Hopefully we’ll have some this summer. 🤞😊

Some really don’t like it and the more they fight it, the worse the experience is for them. Shelties, luckily, have long noses that you can hold! I hold their nose and point it down so the water runs off and doesn’t get in their eyes, ears and nose. Turn the pressure way down and start behind the ears and work forward. Lots of positive reinforcement and don’t be in a hurry. If they really fight this try a sponge until they relax a little. Hope this helps 😊
