Nice try but the antenna in the video has a tuning knob which is not the radio shown in the pamphlet.

The tuning knob has a switch, which is turned off. I can get a couple of stations with it on. I only get one when it's off. It switches a 360pf variable cap in and out of circuit. I've been called out before on this, which is why I recently added labels to the switch so it can be clearly seen if it is off or on. 750AM radio has an antenna 4 miles from my house, so that's what overrides everything else. I have an in-home transmitter, so if I'm inside the house, that is the overriding station.

I plan on building one...what kind of speaker is that? That crystal unit obviously not drive a 4-8 ohm speaker

I've always shied away from RTV when doing old consumer metal-based items as it's really hard on most pot metals. Both 'types' of RTV (smells of ammonia or vinegar) aren't pH neutral and from personal experience the pot metal starts to degrade. I suppose there may be some two-part RTVs that may be pH neutral, but I haven't tried any. Fortunately your base was cast iron so that wasn't an issue. Great video and a really lucky find. Glad YT recommended you!

You can use a bronze guitar string. Get the highest pitch (smallest diameter) you can buy single strings at music stores.

Similar design antenna like that of yours, you are using both ends of the antenna, one to ground n earphone, n other ebd to gang caps. Does the ground end of the antenna needs to connect to the earphone too?

Imp. Question-sir, to add the metal/gang capacitor in this crystal radio, do one needs to make that loop/spiderweb antenna or a horizontal antenna?

this is not the proper way to restore antiques. You've destroyed the patina of that antique speaker.

I don't mess with radios, cabinets, or speakers that are in good shape. I will redo them if there are issues, and this one had issues. Patina isn't always a good thing, in this case it wasn't.

Hello. For tjhe more technically interested guys, is this already a superheterodyne receiver ? What is the IF ? Long time ago they used 110 Khz. Four varable tuning cap's ? Why ? Some detailed explanation using the schematic would reveil a lot to the technique, used in those days. Most kindly, from an old technician in Belgium.

Recently I acquired at an auction a glass-enclosed regen 1920s radio. It's awesome to show this radio to the younger generation to see the vintage electronics with the 4 tubes lighting up.

Isn't it true, though, that after similar "restoration" treatments in subsequent years, no faceplate will remain? How many of these treatments will the faceplate endure? You're removing original physical material from the object and changing its dimensions. Is this treatment "museum correct"? Probably not. Just my opinion.

I have a couple of radios that are going on 20 years. You have to keep them in climate controlled conditions and most importantly away from direct sunlight.

My experience tells me to never use water based cleaning on old hard rubber... Use plain mineral spirits. Use #0000 steel wool. If really bad, start with 400 grit sandpaper. Finish with 1500 grit buffing pad...
@antiqueradioarcheology-wil8878
@antiqueradioarcheology-wil8878 Ай бұрын
@@RadioHist I've used that method as well. This needed much more aggressive treatment which involved hours of work. I have a hard rubber faceplate I did like this over a decade ago and it still looks like the day I did it. On plates with less UV damage I agree 100 percent with you and will definitely work with mineral spirits.

Hello, how are the coupling coils arranged in the L2 L3 anodes, where are they located, are the main coils wound on top or are they intertwined and what is the ratio of turns they have?
@antiqueradioarcheology-wil8878
@antiqueradioarcheology-wil8878 Ай бұрын
The coils are located on the backs of the tuning condensers. They are intertwined so even trying to guess turns ratios would be impossible.

They were not. I'm just showing the process as sometimes the engraving is no longer viable. The plate on that radio was made from scratch. I don't have engraving equipment so I used dry transfer letters instead.

Fantastic job, may I make an observation. Video cameras dont like high contrast, black objects on a white background are extreamly hard for video cameras to resolve. Thank you for posting this, I have an old home brew receiver I think is from the 20s that I am planning to restore.

I've been using an old camera and just got a new one which I haven't tried yet. I hope it does a better job. I do need to work on my video skills. I use those pads because they protect my work bench and absorb liquids. I need to find some that aren't white. Thanks for the observation.

the model 90 cost $69.50 according to the 1931 brochure. Adjusted for inflation in todays money that would be $1,428.10. CRAZY! Beautiful radio my friend. I got a pristine example of a model 90 just today. I love it.

Very nice work. Congrats. Those were the days receivers had same idea. TRF, regenerative, reflex, hetodin, superheterodyne etc. But the heart beat was "ferrite coil". Inductance+band width, without IF amp and scant active electronic parts required front end coils.. Nice work..

Thanks for doing this Greene radio. Info about him is much appreciated. His son (jr) from Chelmsford had an ad years ago asking if anyone had one of his radios. I didn't contact him then and have regretted not doing so ever since. This was probably at least forty years ago. I have gotten a couple of sets since that time. There was a connection with Chelsea and a Worcester department store - Culver-Stearns and it says on the panel that it was manufactured by them. I wonder what the business arrangement was. The other set I have is much more elaborate ie The 1924 Concert Selector. Merrill Bancroft, Townsend, MA

This was a labor of love to say the least. I found the research fascinating, and I really wish I could find his son, though he probably isn't alive. I'm sure he has grandchildren that are, but even finding one interested in radios is a challenge. I did gift a Chelsea Super-Five to the granddaughter of the founder of the Chelsea Radio Company, and I'm working on a set right now that is going to his Great Granddaughter who has taken an interest in that part of her family history as well. It helps that her husband is a HAM operator and experiencing the joy the radio I gifted her mother has brought that family. I will someday delve into the Concert Selector, which also fascinates me. But my biggest dream is to find the Chelsea produced version of this radio to help get the Chelsea Line of radios in my collection closer to completion. I actually have a second Lloyd C. Greene receiver along with the Amplifier. Maybe someone will come along willing to offer a trade.

I'd like to know what you recommend for the best gauge of the wire. Also you don't mention the crystal material. Do you have a source for the wire and crystal. This is interesting to me. I have built a crystal radio over 40 years ago and it used a commercial diode. it would be great to replace the diode with a detector I actually made. I'm a ham and 75. I'm trying to achieve 30 WPM CW. Making slow progress! WD0DUD

The crystal is Galena, the wire gauge was 36 which is too thin. It works well, but it's not easy to handle. It's like working with stronger strands of fiberglass, it penetrates the skin real easy. I prefer about 28 gauge.
