This is one of my favorite songs from SA2 bc it's so funky! It's crazy finding out they didn't record this themselves in a studio but it's still a great piece they put together nonetheless!😂

If your asking why they didn't just hire musicians. It's because the Music was w.r.i.t.t.e.n. and produced starting with the samples As opposed to being written on paper first it usually credits the composer and what machine they used. I believe many sa2 tracks were made on an mpc2000xl I suppose the music could have been replayed live to give a real instrument sound. Would've cost way though for sure

True, for additional detail: Ohtani wrote his tracks on the MPC2000XL while Senoue wrote his tracks with Logic (before switching to Pro Tools for SA2B and onwards)

It was common back then to use samples/ROMplers/VSTi because having a full band means you have to pay them too, and with how many songs need to be made for a game, that is actually really expensive. It is also still done today though, I mean, even Dark Souls 3 actually uses a lot of VST instruments (background choirs, pianos, strings, the solo vocals are pretty much the only recorded instrument there). Also fun fact, the choir from the iconic Halo theme is actually a patch from a Roland ROMpler, not a recording of a real choir.

It took me 20 damn years to find out my ears were lying to me! I thought a real band was a part of this, not spliced in. I would play these parts on my trombone sometimes and to learn that this is a spliced pattern in this sound excites me and terrifies me all at the same time!

You'd be shocked how much of music you hear is samples. For some reason I feel there is this connotation that samples are lazy or not impressive. You can have your own opinion on that but the fact is that everyone uses them, even industry professionals. In a literal sense, almost everyone uses them because they're not recording nor synthesizing the percussion

There is an artist called Skybreak who makes music that is very inspired by old video games and Sonic especially. And he discovered that they used one of his samples in Sonic Forces. I think that's so cool tbh

As others have said, there’s a good chance it’s because of time and budget constraints. That said, especially in regards to the drums, there’s also a good chance that was a stylistic choice.

Firstly: This is awesome, I love seeing what samples and synths were used in various soundtracks. Secondly: Where can you find these sample packs? Specifically Dance Industrial 1 and 2? I've looked around but have had no such luck. :/
