i think it's possible to optimize the commands into /fill but you would have to implement some kind of algorithm i'm thinking of greedy meshing but for images. ChatGPT is suggesting stuff like "Minimal rectangle decomposition" and "Quad-tree image decomposition" Stack Overflow question "Minimum number of rectangles in shape made from rectangles?" got an answer that looks kinda like greedy meshing to me. also found on Stack Overflow "Algorithm for finding the fewest rectangles to cover a set of rectangles without overlapping" which got a more theoretical answer
