I don't speak Welsh, really. But I learned a some of it from being with Jan Morris.

Real class workmanship and skills, worthwhile activity and a reminder that NZ once prioritised investment in passenger trains, but through decades of poor decisions, Political indifference and corporate sabotage we have lost what we once had. With 21st Century rail technologies available off the shelf-bring back trains and the inherent expertise to operate Railways for the benefit of people’s work (and leisure) lifestyles

why the locos Elephant style and not back-to-back?
@ronsurgenor74514 күн бұрын
Good question, some one may be able to answer that !
@bigkiwimike11 күн бұрын
Our general manager likes locos running elephant style. Seeing as this was a major achievement for GVR having two locos out together for the first time, why not take the opportunity to do so. There was no requirement to run back to back for this leg of the trip. At Ohakune, the Dbr was turned as it was desirable to have the locos running back to back for the days ahead.

What a fantastic film thanks for sharing this story as an Aussie I had no idea that New Zealand was such a beautiful place and how much the railway was worth to the country Which is quite embarrassing as I was a boilermaker in the railways at Newport workshops for 13 years

Having lived in Auckland on the North Shore, between 1958 and 1960, I really enjoyed this video. Loved the Daimler Freelines particularly. A real surprise to see NST no.95, a vehicle that I often rode on, going to school. It would be great if any video or cine of NST vehicles such as the Macks, Daimler COG5s and any ex Waitemata Bus Co. vehicles exist and could be shown on KZbin. Well done for this video!
Yes 30 years ago, (first day with new video camera).

Walked part of this in about 1986 with Graeme Carter and a couple of other guys. We were part of an organised group but most only went as the tunnel and spiral. Line was quite overgrown as you went further in and at times we had to scout about to find it. Graeme went back subsequently and got as far as at least first viaduct site. Good times.

It's all very muted and toned down today. Too much expectancy and very rehearsed. The banter has gone and the promenaders numbers are down.
Thank you for a great piece of West Coast history..
