What a beautiful job!! And an excellent presentation as well!! I’d love to see those sketches of the various parts you used and perhaps a look around the shop of tools you used to create this lovely “64”…
@DrTinkerJim10 күн бұрын
Thanks for your kind remarks. Alas, I no longer have any of those sketches, only the scale drawing shown in the video. I made the "1964" with my vintage 1921 South Bend 9" lathe and milling attachment.

Excellent work! These have always fascinated me. I believe there's an overlooked use for these in our modern world and I might know a way for it to heat itself without a flame... ! ;)

I’m considering a vacuum engine as my next build and looking for alternatives to “Poppin”. Would you please point me to the plans for this little beauty? Thanks in advance!
@DrTinkerJim3 жыл бұрын
I did not publish drawings for this engine, 'Whiffin", but it is similar to the slightly larger "Poppin". I described Poppin with full plans in Live Steam Magazine some years ago. Many Poppins have been made from these plans, examples of which can be seen in KZbin videos.

its beautiful , but if it s use 56 mikroA/3 volt you can also use a 1,5 volt battery with 112mikroA , at last if battery goes by the 3 volt low to 2 volt the electronic device stop working , but by 1,5 volt battery it works further , because the falling difference will be much smaller , therefore to use 1,5 volt is every time much better, and the lower tact frequence you can build with a longer ratio of the rotor

perfect idea incase of a power failure. You could get light and run a small generator that could charge your phone.

@@hotimchenko Most model vacuum engines have a stroke of about one and a half times the bore. Gulppin was an experiment to determine the characteristics of a vacuum engine with a short stroke to bore ratio. No plans were published.

Vacuum engines are very amusing thermo-mechanical devices. I have made a half dozen of them in various sizes just for the experience of seeing and hearing them run. But they do not produce much power. Their mean effective pressure is bounded above by one atmosphere, and is very much less than that in practice. In contrast, the mean effective pressure for common normally aspirated spark ignition auto engines is somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 or 12 atmospheres. Regardless, the operation of these vacuum engines is uniquely delightful !

Great motor. Do you think a sapphire bearing would reduce the draw? Paul
@DrTinkerJim7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment ! The bearing I used on this motor is simply a length of brass tube running on a 1/32” diameter music wire shaft with a tiny pair of repelling ring magnets below providing a non-contact “thrust bearing”.

Dear Chrystal...We bought the terra cotta pots and bowls at an outdoor garden center. Right now, I cannot tell you the sizes, b/c the fountain is still in the storage shed from the winter. We just picked out the biggest terra cotta planter bowl they had at the shop, and then chose the other pieces to suit. If you take at look at the description of the Terra Cotta Fountain at the Instructables website, you should be able to judge the sizes from the photographs...Best wishes...TinkerJim
