I was glad to hear the PCL manager talking about WBS. The host made a comment about developing the schedule “on the wall” and avoiding that. That is a key part of the training - understanding float and how it’s calculated. Let’s not promote the key punching as much as we do. Knowing how to read plans, creating relationships, job site visits, and “learning” the soft skills (communication, mining for data, etc) needs to be part of training and development. I’ve never let someone go because they didn’t know how to push the buttons. They were unsuccessful because they didn’t know how to build - or worse - didn’t want to know how.

Thanks for your comment-great points! When I mentioned “on the wall” scheduling, I was referring to relying solely on physical boards or paper to develop schedules, which can limit deeper analysis like float calculations. Moving beyond the basics of button-pushing is crucial, as you said. I also agree that soft skills, job site experience, and understanding how to build are what set great schedulers apart. Tools are important, but without that real-world knowledge, success is hard to achieve. Appreciate you adding to the conversation-this perspective is so valuable!

Great subject, Thank you! I love the dashboard! I have a question though, was this project cost loaded in p6 and then you import it in Power BI?
@BeyondDeadlinesАй бұрын
Thanks NikkiKhannezhad for the feedback. I believe the project was cost loaded in P6. From what I can remember from Matthew he could do it if it was loaded in P6 or if it wasn't. If it's not in P6, then you'll need to figure out a mapping structure to connect your cost to your schedule. Hope this helps!

Hi Micah & Greg, I absolutely loved the discussion-it was so insightful that I didn’t even realize when the video ended. Just wow! Truly amazing. Please keep creating more content like this! 😊 I had a thought-perhaps in scenarios like this, sharing a brief agenda with the client beforehand could be beneficial. Also, since we touched on reporting, presenting sample one-page dashboards with key KPIs could make a positive first impression on the client. Building on those samples, this could serve as an excellent follow-up opportunity for the next meeting, where we could showcase dashboard previews and relevant KPIs such as SPI/CPI, time-to-go-live metrics, estimated cash outflows for funding arrangements, key issues, risks and their estimated impact on KPIs, and decision points prioritized based on what’s critical or near-critical. Just some thoughts-I’d love to hear your views!

Thank you so much for your kind words. We’re thrilled you enjoyed the discussion! Your suggestions are fantastic. Sharing a brief agenda with clients beforehand is a great way to set expectations, and presenting sample one-page dashboards with key KPIs can make a strong first impression. Metrics like SPI/CPI, time-to-go-live, and risk impacts provide clarity and serve as a great foundation for follow-up discussions. We love your idea of prioritizing decision points, it’s an excellent way to foster trust and collaboration. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, and we’ll keep these in mind for future content!

Amazing guys. I have 21 years experience in Planning (oil and gas industry) and i'm looking for how to use AI for scheduling and the topic "AI in Construction" was essential for me. Here in Brazil we are still in our infancy in terms of AI planning. MS Project and Priamvera P6 still reign supreme.

Spot on Gentlemen! Decomplexification, another testimony to Greg’s Britishness! If I could change one thing about P6 it would be the network diagram. I still struggle with presenting it to people on large projects. Do you know any application that could help?

I've tried quite a few solutions. My favorite is a couple bars with a timeline that is in quarters. The major phases summarized. Then add in a key milestone table. Hope that helps.

Very useful! My favorite metrics are Percent Complete and SPI. I believe the weight factors in the Percent Complete metric should be tailored to the project. These can be either dollar-based or duration-based, and I’ve even seen projects that used a combination of both. I’ve also developed a metric to identify unbalanced bids and monitor contractors’ profit margins throughout the project. Since profit margin is a key motivator for contractors, we want to ensure their motivation remains consistent over time. Please let me know if this sounds interesting, and I’d be happy to send you the paper. P.S.: The title and topic of your book seem fascinating! I just ordered it.

Thank you for sharing your insights! Percent Complete and SPI are indeed key metrics, and tailoring Percent Complete to the project makes a lot of sense. I'd like to see your paper on monitoring contractors' profit margins-sounds fascinating! Also, thank you for ordering the book! I hope it provides useful tactics for your career.

Nice to find something like that on KZbin. A 22-year scheduler here. Definitely a lot of valid points. I don't think there is a catch all for a happier scheduler life, but, one of the things that kept coming in ny way was, how to articulate to the team what you feel like they need to ask for, imho this is one of the biggest pain points

I totally agree with you on the implementation period and resources needed being decision making criterion while comparing them to the business case goals. We faced this challenge when implementing Holo Builder which was dropped after one project due to limited resources and untapped goals that could not extend its usage to other projects.
Very insightful and thank you for the realistic analysis and explanation of a complex predictability problem. Certainly taking the 5 key elements with me
