Great video. Heard about it from the Hackaday podcast where they gave it a mention.

Great video. I've debated a DIY scale of some sort for my hives. I wouldn't worry about putting warnings in future videos because anyone with a bee phobia (technically melissophobia or apiphobia) has no business watching videos with bees in the title. Might be a good lesson for them if they happen to get triggered ... the importance of reading titles. 🤣

Load cells are awesome. But once you learn how to use and apply strain gauges, you can make a load cell out of almost anything. One project (in a professional capacity) I had was a novel approach to measuring lift in a hybrid drone/plane design. I applied strain gauges to the carbon fiber wing spar. To calibrate, we flipped it upside down, and then applied calibration weights according to the load distribution of the wing design. I think we went through 10 steps of lift loading, such that we had this whole table of data. Even though we "hacked" a load cell out of unconventional materials, it was still surprisingly linear. The 4 wire load cells are full Wheatstone Bridges (often termed "completed"),. They have all four resistive elements. Meanwhile, the later cells you show with three wires are half bridges. They require two additional resistors (usually back in the amplifier PCB), or you can use them in pairs. The advantage of the full bridge is that they are temperature independent. All 4 resistor elements are attached to the same thermal object (the load cell metal), so there is no drift in measurement due to temperature differences. The other advantage is that they obviously do not require a completion circuit. So, you could connect a single load cell to that amplifier board and it will work as a single cell scale. A potential disadvantage is a mechanical one: In order to have all 4 strain gauges mounted to the cell, in such a way as to be that when unloaded, it is thermally and mechanically equally biased, cells must be mounted on both top and bottom. When the load cell is under load, the strain gauges on the top are stretched, while the gauges on the bottom are compressed. This serves to effectively amplify the output signal more than a single gauge design. However, needing to have 4 gauges could pose mechanical issues, depending on the application. You must be sure your design does not apply mechanical pressure on the white rubber on top or bottom. The 3 wire cells are generally cheaper to manufacture, as they only need 2 strain gauges (and there is a "trick" to use only one, making them super cheap). But with the completion circuit often packed away in a nice cozy box somewhere, they are highly temperature dependent. They drift a lot, and need regular calibration. To mitigate this, they are often installed in twos or all four, rather than singular cells. The pairs complement each other, and are "at the source" so there is less temperature differential between them, leading to less drift.

This is good stuff! Thanks! The half bridge design seems much more 'mechanically' secure so far - I've some questions about the original one with the independent amplifiers and cells as I'm not totally convinced it's been reading right. Very likely I'll do a version 3 of these scales this summer, taking into account your comments there.

@@BenjaminBlundell Last year we built a few bee scales with the parallel beam load cell (first type you showed). Just a single cell in the middle of one side (mounted to some aluminum L so as to grab the edge of the beehive), using the lever method i.e. the opposite side is static. Cell itself measures great, but hive measurement is considerable approximation, depending on if the bees work middle out, or for some reason huddle to one end a bit more than the other.

There are modern keyboard replacements for the A500 and modern optical mice that are compatible without needing an adapter or a mod.
@BenjaminBlundellАй бұрын
I felt the tank mouse was something I could keep, whereas the floppy drive I was keen to replace, although the HDD makes the gotek a bit redundant. I'd like to do a complete modern a1200 at some point, complete with network, modern keyboard and mouse as you suggest. That would be more of a workhorse computer. It's on the list :)

🐝Always good to see badges in use. Do you measure hive temperature with a sensor too?
@BenjaminBlundellАй бұрын
Thanks! No, I don't measure temperature. I'd have to modify the hive a bit which I'm reluctant to do, and any sensor would get covered in propolis after a while but I'll think on.

Very cool project! The only thing I'd like to mention is that those exercise weights often vary from their marked mass. And if your calibration is off on a 1.4Kg weight, then extrapolating that scale factor out to 44Kg might mean that you end up off by multiple Kilos. It might be worth it to calibrate using a heavier weight, or use a known good scale to measure your small weight to ensure you're using an accurate measure. Of course, if a kilogram or two doesn't really matter here, then feel free to ignore me!
@BenjaminBlundellАй бұрын
It's a good point aye! I did weigh that weight on a set of kitchen scales and it was as reported. I don't mention that on the video though. Perhaps I should put that down on the blog? Thanks! Tbh, I'm worried how they'll report as the weather changes and it gets colder.
@epremeaux17 күн бұрын
for this reason, when working with load cells (I too have made a few bee hive scales for a friend, as well as a lot of other stuff), I try to have AT LEAST a low and a high weight calibration points. See my other comment..

Vampire is a very expensive accelerator, in the end it costs more than a current cheap PC, with the power of a pentium that you can buy for 10 or they will even give it to you as a gift. I would have bought it as an expensive whim for my Amiga500, for 100-150 but it is an absurd expense.

To remove stickers you can use for example the hot air of a hairdryer. In the other videos of restored Amigas I have seen that they use hydrogen peroxide with UV light for this. After that the device and the keys look like new from the store. I would clean the case and keys again. I think it's great that there are so many upgrades for the Amiga 👍 If I had known that there would be such extensions one day, I would have kept my Amiga 500 and 1200. Thank you for the upgrade guide. 🙂

Why limit yourself with only a meagre 512K RAM expansion, go for the max! An 86000 processor could imagine itself something like 32 Megabyte, so give the chap 32 Megabyte!
