There IS a market for wood burl. They're used in sculpture and home decor. Burled wood furniture has come back into trend and small carved pieces looks very unique. The rings you saw inside the burl have a unique look to them, especially when polished. They're somewhat uncommon and take a long time to grow large

That looks like a gall, usually found on oak trees but it occurs in other species. it's caused by wasps, who lay eggs under the bark and it causes it to grow these woody masses. They are usually smooth and harmless to the tree, and the gall protects and feeds the wasp larva. I find these a lot where I live, they are not even remotely related to fungi. The wasps aren't the kind that sting humans, and wasps are important pollinators so it's an a-hole move to destroy their "nurseries".
