Can the full version of this movie be found on the web to watch free? All I see are short clips. Particularly important for today's society of aging parents in 2023!

Fun fact: A teenager named Melvin Kaminsky saw Victor Moore in a Broadway show with Ethel Merman as a kid. He was stagestruck on the spot, vowing to get into the entertainment business instead of the gown trade. That was Mel Brooks.

Thanks for this synopsis.It would have been helpfull to read this before seeing the movie as the story is quite complicated and not always easy to follow. Some kind of explaination as to what 'the numbers game' entailed might have been included for the benefit of a non Amreican audience.However this is an excellent film,one of the best of its kind,good photography and picture quality,good sound, and excellent acting performances.It must have been a considerable feat of editing to string this plot together in such a way as to make sense.

Every child should see this movie. Their parents had them and then they'll wait til their golden years without saving enough and be a damn burden on their kids. Don't fall for that. Tell them NO. Let them go to a rest home together. Why burden yourself and your families and friends with senile old people who can't even afford to keep up a home of their own. You didn't ask to be born. Why allow them to use you later in life as their security blanket. Let the state pay for them. Enjoy your life while you are young and don't waste it away molly coddling a couple of deadbeats. Who told them to have five kids? Clearly they couldn't afford it. Same way in 2020. People have all these kids and then want to live off the government in housing and food stamps. Kids want more out of life. They've seen their deadbeat parents have too many kids they can't afford and kids have to suffer until they can get out on their own and have a good life. Don't let the old people drag you down with any guilt.

When Orson Welles met upcoming film maker Pete Bogdanovich for the first time, Bogdanovich mentioned this film and Welles said, "Isn't that the saddest movie ever made?" Leo McCarey won best director at the 1938 Oscars (1937 films) for the divorce-and-remarriage screwball comedy "The Awful Truth," starring Cary Grant, Irene Dunne, and Ralph Bellamy. When McCarey gave his acceptance speech, he said that he had won for the wrong movie. Bondi and Mitchell, mother and son in this film, played sister-in-law and brother-in-law in Frank Capra's "It's A Wonderful Life" (1946).

Why not mention Tucker’s People by Ira Wolfert? This film was based on this brilliantly written novel. Ira co wrote the script with Abe Polanski. Ira is my late grandfather and I want people to know and recognize the great writing in his novel. He is also a Pulitzer Prize winning author and journalist. Other novels of note are Act of Love and Married Men.

I have never seen such a terrible movie, rather terrifying, nor war, tragedy of heroes is comparable to this, never s story has spoken to me in this way, this is like looking straight to death itself and not a glorifying one from heroes that you can soon dismiss as fantasy, and the fact that its shot in 1937 makes it even worse, having the fresh generation of that past almost perished and so will the next ones and the next ones truly painful... (And the main song reminds me of Everybody Loves Somebody)
@paulmerritt85934 жыл бұрын
Amazing what this movie can do to you. I have never seen anything so tragic and so wonderful at the same time. They were truly as heart broken as a person could be but so in love none of it mattered and the knew what they had the best 50 years a person could have. This love story puts all others to shame.
