Dude. This is such an articulate, concise and honestly, profound take on being homeschooled. Seriously, so well put…I was also homeschooled- 3rd through high school. My parents chose it for religious reasons and as you talked about, to make our world smaller and more sheltered. If you were to ask any of my 5 siblings, or myself, we would say it was not a good choice for a multitude of reasons. The largest, not even being academic, but more mental health. Education wise, while we all would say it was lacking in many areas, we all tested high on college entrance exams, standard tests, etc. What you said about parents acknowledging that the children may be smarter, that their world view may not be complete, and that there is so much they themselves do not know, hit hard with me. Kudos to you having the confidence to talk about this(I’m 40 and still insecure about it at time!- ridiculous I know)…..last thing- what your mom did that allowed you to play ball with paying taxes was gangster and I absolutely love it.

Ah yeah Enzo Mari stuff doesn't increase in value.. His table only costs 17 thousands €, his chairs 1400 each, he has paperweights that costs 3k. What are you talking about ? And if your work is not political by choice why even picking Enzo? The man would have literally laughed at you for that take

I'm a fine artist who's probably much more in line with Enzo Mari's politics - of course, I think he was sometimes too ultra-left/a bit of a downtrodden older socialist, but still never sold out on his core beliefs. Somewhat similar to Jean-Luc Godard in a way, but for design. However, I thought you really approached this topic with great care and true appreciation despite your political difference. I really loved this video, thanks 😊

Shower shelving-I designed using small slabs of slate I picked up from the ground on a walk about on family land in Rapid City SD. Had tile guy set slab pieces into corners of shower at differing heights that accommodate a variety of toilietries. Natural stone vibe against clear glass subway tile really turned out extremely cool. Treated slate slabs with same sealant used on tiles to waterproof. And Bam…done!

Great 1st of a series choice. Of course buying mass produced simple wood chair would likely be cheaper than making one’s own. However, designs such as yours make “making” less intimidating. Add to that the prospect of making something that actually looks good and and you have more motivation to try. Learning with basic tools to make a straight cut can be the first step to build confidence for more sophisticated projects and a skill development. Imj.

I've been watching your videos from home made modern since 2014; I remember because I was an architecture undergrad at the time, and your design style resonated with me a lot. The first thing I thought when I started watching your videos was having that feeling that Enzo Mari influenced your work, and I definitely share the same opinion you do regarding his work. Enzo Mari's greatness as a designer lies in his profound understanding of design's role in society, his commitment to meaningful and responsible creations, and his enduring influence on the design community. His legacy continues to inspire designers to think critically about their work and I really hope he is never forgotten.

I was curious about how time was budgeted for home schooling and how that compares to the time spent when you went to a public school? You touched on efficiencies with the large number of children and different learning speeds. An advantage I see with home schooling is that a kid can go outside to investigate some subjects instead of looking at photos while in the prison, I mean classroom. : ) Not sure it is for this channel, but I would love to hear your thoughts on home building and remodeling from an environmental perspective. I know you shared ideas and knowledge with the container house build. Loved that. Learned much. Sincerely appreciated. I am guessing you have more to share with your new place. I just know your think about environmental benefits often and your sense of design is fantastic. Would love to hear you speak more about it. Your Mom and Dad are cool. Thanks to them for giving our planet fabulous beings! ♥

it varied quite a bit with my siblings but for me I typically spent about 2-3 hours on average of focused sit down school work a day for grades 3rd-8th and about 3-4 hours 9th-11th grades. Yes! I will be doing an entire show on how to build your own home

Ben, this is so fascinating and helpful! My wife and I have been thinking about homeschooling as we prepare to be parents. I value your perspective tremendously. I would be really interested to hear your take on how changes in modern technology might impact homeschool education now, or just the education process in general. Remote classes, independent online curriculum, youtube as a method of self-directed learning, or even social media as a homeschooler's connection to friends. The options and availability are pretty different to when we were kids.

Thank you Forby! There is a real value to in person social interaction both with peers and with teachers who have advanced knowledge in a specific field. Homeschool worked well for me and I am grateful for it but those two aspects I experienced my senior year could not be fully replicated at home. Remote classes and online curriculums are tricky. For our family the value was in the grade level testing which gave us assurances that we were at or above our age level. That peace of mind was important for both me and my parents and gave us the confidence that we could be creative and flexible with how we did day to day learning. My concern with online courses would revolve around what sort of screen time they require.

Great episode sir. Thoroughly enjoyed it and thanks for sharing. Just wanted to share I currently work at the Christian university I attended as an undergrad and I always admired my homeschooled peers and now as a manager, I prefer to hire home schooled student workers because they're just better overall employees; they're smarter, do good work, take direction well and don't need to be micromanaged. Just my two cents :-)

Fascinating "podcast(?)"!!! So it wasn't very clear to me whether your parents were driven religiously or were more "hippy type" to home-school all of you and whether kids had any choice in the matter. I agree with your points in the danger of "bubble" type of isolation of home-schooling and the benefit of supplementing home-schooling with additional educations from outside sources (e.g. community college). I guess in order to succeed in home-schooling, one would need invested parents (both of 'em). You talked about f'd up home-schooled kids ... seems similar to many "pastor's kids" I've met in life. I don't think I ever met a home-schooled kid in my life (I'm a bit older than you). I grew up as a foreign born kid of a 1st gen Korean immigrant who followed a typical path while both parents worked hard to feed the family. FYI, I started my uni education at Cal Poly SLO :-)

My Mom is a christian and my dad is more on the agnostic side but their primary motivation related more to their thoughts on child development than on moral protection. they had mild hippyish tendencies in their youth.

Don't know much about you as this is my first video I watched from you but think about moving the slabs around - you need a tractor or forklift. Maybe you already have the machine - not sure, maybe you already have a mill that can really wide boards, and then maybe you already have a way to flatten the boards once dried.

milling and drying is a full time job . You need Lage machinery to move large logs . Unless you are using a hundreds of slabs I would stick to buying them as needed . You will also need a humidity controlled area to store the dried lumber and it will never be big enough . Just a few things to consider . Good luck either way .
