There are 2 songs around the 5 minute area that are cut off. Would you or anyone reading this happen to have the song titles of those songs?

I liked it. I would probably have liked it better if I hadn't listened to the NPR version, the golden standard against which all the others must be judged. This cast certainly knew all the words, but they came at their roles with too much energy. The genius if the NPR crew was that they let the horror dawn on them as they strove to present their characters as dedicated professionals. They went seamlessly through stages of confidence, damage control, despair, resignation and astonished relief and took us along with them. In this version, the cast ran the lines -- well -- but with a detectable urgency that suggested they knew what was coming, and since we did as well, the theme couldn't fully ripen. Well, let's not make it sound as though they chewed the scenery, or whatever the radio equivalent is; it was a brave effort to take on a classic, and they saw it though in good form.

Hey, we were just a bunch of very young rock DJs having fun. It was a blast doing it. I'd love to hear the NPR version. Bet we could do amu h better job with our 50 more years of experience behind us. Thanks for the comments.

I've heard all versions. The original is by far the best.

Tex was the voice you hear at about 12:40 or so. On CKXL, they would jabber for the whole 4 hours between the music, and throw in a bunch of weird sound effects.

Does anyone have any recordings of his time at CKXL with Tex? It was hilarious morning show 6-10 am daily around 1970 or so.

I love the old doppler radar used in this special- it was one of those rare Rockwell Collins models that KOMU 8 used to use.

Cool hearing this but I have one wish, that people who post air checks would have them unscoped or at least leave the commercials 100% intact.

"Aircheck" recordings on tape, before the digital era, were usually made on a machine activated by the board mic, as a way for a DJ or newscaster to review their work. They are "scoped," or telescoped as the word is derived, at the time they are being made, since the music and commercials were not the primary focus. Sometimes, if illustrating the art of the segue, or a tight backtime, the air talent would leave the mic switch "on," providing a longer recorded passage between elements in the show. Another source of recordings comes from "logging" machines, found at the bigger radio stations. They ran a very slow tape speed, sometimes very narrow track, on big 10" open reels. Just enough audio quality if the lawyers needed to review anything.

Thank you for making this available! I have been fascinated by these remakes/alternate versions of the WOTW broadcast that have been done over the decades by different stations, and while WKBW-Buffalo IMO set the standard because it didn't just follow the original 1938 script, these versions have a certain charm to them as well.

Friday afternoon, late August, and 75°. Like I tell people who complain about the heat & humidity, it didn't use to be so bad in Nawfuk. Love that reverb!

Becky, you are AMAZING!! I am humbled beyond words that you chose to perform my song at the NDS Congress in DC, and you did the most beautiful rendition ever--better than any version I've ever done!! I was so happy to see you and your parents at the Live Art movie, and I'll look forward to seeing you all again very soon!! Much love to you all, and thank you again, so very much, for sharing your wonderful performance with me!!
