I actually agree that Dementus is probably the best part of the story. My issues lie in both writing and visuals. There was a horrific overuse of bad cgi and green screen. None of the action scenes held enough power or stakes to make me care. Furiosa also makes some really weird wishy washy decisions that don't add up with her overall character they tried building. Sometimes, she's really smart, and sometimes, she's super dumb. Praetorian Jack was a throwaway character whom we were supposed to care about in such a small amount of time that his death felt so useless and was only there to drive the story forward. Her entire escape into becoming a mechanic feels so unfinished, like George and the other writer were desperate when trying to figure out how to transport her from breeder to mechanic. I can not tell you how disappointing and just "MEDIOCRE" The movie truly was for me. None of the action felt fun. We did so much world building just to completely skip the entire war this led up to. The story was way too choppy and you can tell George and his co-writer had no clue how to forward the story and explain the regression of Gas Town and Dementus, or how he even successfully took the Bullet Farm. Dementus is a great villain until George makes him unnecessarily stupid for some story sequences to make sense. Scrotus existing doesn't make sense since we never talk about him in Fury Road. God, it's just... this movie pisses me off as a writer and as a hardcore fan of the Mad Max series. How was Gastown, a damn fortress, taken so stupidly easy??? Why didn't the Bullet Farm warn Immortan about its invasion??? Why even show us Max if his character is basically supposed to be passing through in Fury Road???? I just can't with them.

@@cinemaatob No problem. I'm glad I could find some people who actually watched and paid attention to this movie like I did. Everyone else I've seen reviewing it seem to be inflating there scores, and avoiding the massive issues with this movie and it's just depressing when people try to gaslight you into thinking your wrong.

Very enjoyable discussion and I agree that in general Rogue One was a success. My only big criticisms are about pacing and dialogue/cliches. I thought the first third dragged a bit for me even though I’m happy enough to wallow in the atmosphere of a ‘serious’ Star Wars film. My other negative was some of the dialogue not being Gilroyed enough. I thought the Yavin IV rebel debate was pretty trite and the closing ‘hope’ was a bit too on the nose for me. Agree on the CG actors not quite working and the unnecessary cantina duo cameo. I love the K2SO theory! Finally, when talking about knitting R1 together with the Andor show, have you seen the little notebook strapped to the front of Cassian’s jacket in Rogue One? Perhaps Nemik’s Manifesto!

This is a way superior movie to Gladiator, LOTR etc. I think it is one of the last truly great epics to come out of Hollywood. Better to compare it to Lean's and Leone's output. It is also a fantastic adaption of the source material. Read the books and you will see what I mean.

Not sure that it's necessarily way way better than Gladiator and or LOTR but we believe the reality is it's absolutely on the level of those films but without the hardware or public praise. Your Lean comparison is spot on. Thanks for the comment.

1950: George Arnaud releases his novel "LE SALAIRE DE LA PEUR" (THE WAGES OF FEAR) 1953: Henri George Clouzot films it as "LE SALAIRE DE LA PEUR" (THE WAGES OF FEAR) 1958: Howard W. Koch films it as "VIOLENT ROAD" AKA "HELL'S HIGHWAY" 1977: William Friedkin films it as "SORCERER" - after it tanks at the U.S box office it re-named "WAGES OF FEAR" for overseas release, it was also savagely re-edited by the studio removing all of the first hour of the movie, reinserting the backstories as flash backs. This version also differs to Bill Friedkin's preferred director's cut with several unique scenes - the opening is also slightly different with a long helicopter shot instead of the stone carving

Excellent discussion, gentlemen! I agreed with pretty much every point you made here. Particularly how ANDOR Season 1 has made Rogue One an even better film than it originally was. I’m sure that Season 2 will take this enhancement even further. And I hope that Gilroy finds a way to bring back Felicity Jones to appear as Jyn Erso in the story in the later episodes (even though we know that she doesn’t cross paths with Cassian, Mon Mothma*, etc. until the movie). *Special kudos to Genevieve O’Reilly, for fleshing out the character of Mon Mothma so compellingly. Taking her from a peripheral character in Return Of The Jedi, into one of the most important and influential characters of the Rebellion. 🙂
