Why do you have to go all the way back to Full Astern and then put it to Full Ahead?

If you ever fancy heading over to Scilly, it would be awesome to see Shieldhall and Scillonian 3 from the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company together. Sc'illonian 3 isn't a SS but the company itself has a rich history of running a steamship to the islands, we also have a lovely sound that passengers can go around the archipelago on tripper boats that cruise ships usually take advantage of. Well done on a fantastic year! Safe passage, good watch.

Despite its original purpose, to sail on this vessel is a lovely experience. I was aboard when courting my wife and signed up as shareholder when we took the children on one of the longer voyages ten years later, twenty years ago 💕✔.

Please just steady up and slow down: bearded exuberance has its great place, but heritage is the key; I write as a life member from the turn of the Millennium.

What is the reason for the seaman to pull the lever back to "full" and then again push it all the way forward to "full" and only after that pull it to the position he was commanded?

Southampton was really a late player in the ocean liner market, to the best of my knowledge it only really kicked off when White Star inagurated their Southampton service in 1907, providing a weekly service with two of their largest liners Adriatic and Oceanic, and two smaller liners from the previous decade, Teutonic and Majestic. Cunard began servicing Southampton with the Aquitania in 1914, though Lusitania and Mauretania stated at Liverpool until 1919. Following the war, the world's biggest liners all used Southampton docks. There's a glorious poster from the 1930's showcasing SS Normandie and RMS Queen Mary, then the world's grandest liners. An era that has since been lost, but replaced be booming cruise industry.

Tiny detail - Aquitania is pronounced "Aqui-tay-nia", as heard in this 1935 Pathé newsreel: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKWTlX5vg8uEh6Msi=ThYeKgPlU1qoZESy

This is honestly kinda sad and embarrassing to see. The fact that we embellish this tragedy in such a senseless way. Titanic's journey out of Southampton was nothing out of the ordinary, and she would be followed by hundreds and hundreds of other similar liners. The only difference here being how it ended in tragedy. That's what it boils down to.

What a lovely machine! Triple expansion engines! Yes, like the Titanic, but she had two triple expansion reciprocating engines for ahead and a high pressure turbine driving the centre line prop for astern motion and maximum ahead speed. Shieldhall is really beautiful and so odd to have modern equipment we take for granted, yet old fashioned oil fired boilers to make steam. Well done to all of Shieldhall's membership and crew.
