Best part is one of his earliest speaking roles was the reverse, where he was a Korean who needed a translator in a MADTV skit. The "translator" was Bobby Lee.

I know they use artificial laughter for sitcoms but it's just painful to hear them dub it in as if there's a live audience that totally understands Korean and is laughing at everything that the patient and translator are saying.

To hollywood script writer... Translator: for the written word Interpreter: for the spoken word. Just sayin...

At one time Hollywood was using non Koreans to play Koreans and their Korean was really bad.

This is funny.... When i lived in China i translated Japanese documents into Chinese and was a translator for Japanese customers. I got that a lot as well given i am not Asian.

Love this! I worked with a Brazilian that spoke perfect Arabic. Boy, you should have seen that faces when she would start interpreting.

As a Viet, I once went to a Chinese BBQ shop one time with my friends, wanting to show off a bit and order some roast pork for them in Viet, since the owner was Viet. However, my dialect was of the Hue region, and is often hard to understand by both North and South Viets. So when I ordered, the store owner didn’t understand me at all. The kicker of this story: there was an African American customer who could roughly speak Viet who heard what I said and translated it to the store owner, who understood every single word he said. The absolute disrespect. 😂

I keep getting pings on my phone for replies to another comment I made, so I also kinda wanted to point out that it's actually a pretty sore spot with a lot of my 교포 friends when native koreans mock them for not knowing "their" language, despite the fact my friends are 3rd and sometimes even 4th gen Korean-Americans. So, to all the third culture kids watching this and feeling some kinda way: at the end of the day, you're american/european/whatever diaspora. You aren't less ethnically Korean for not speaking the language, just like my white ass isn't any more Korean because I do. If you have a curiosity about the language, then for sure, learn it, but don't let some rando on the internet or a character in a show (or even a granny on the street,) make you feel like you're any "less than" if you don't want to learn. Dr. Ken was a great show. The one where they go to a wedding and get kicked out was awesome. The Kids at home were also killing it that episode. Dr. Ken does some amazing dancing at the Wedding .....before he gets kicked out.
