Follow up question, do you know if a list that has everything in the hainish cycle set out in time order? I'd love to do a chronological read-through
@SirWhatthefuckever2 жыл бұрын
Library of America published all the Hainish stories in a two volume boxed set - unfortunately it's in order of first publishing, instead of this here chronological order. A missed opportunity. Thanks to this video, the preferred order of reading is clear, if one wants some sense of chronological continuity between the novels.

It’s much easier to see the influence of human anthropology and her love of native societies when you span out the stories.

Do you mind if I disagree? From the little I’ve seen, LeGuin had no direct influence on JK Rowling …
@jackjensen4225 жыл бұрын
Of course! I was referring to how LeGuin invented the first wizarding school for young magic-users with her school on Roke. The premise of a place like Hogwarts comes straight from Earthsea, and while Rowling's work definitely took that in new directions, the foundation is LeGuin.
@MrCuddy29775 жыл бұрын
@@jackjensen422 The trouble is … ? Rowling had never heard of, or read LeGuin. Yes, you’re right: Earthsea’s the first time in literature a wizard school was seen. But Rowling wouldn’t have got it there. Oh, you’re not the first to compare them … But saying it was an influence? Is a whole different thing
@jackjensen4225 жыл бұрын
@@MrCuddy2977 I'd be surprised if she'd never heard of LeGuin; she's well-known in the literary world. Even if she got the germ of an idea from some other source, that source owed LeGuin for coming up with it in the first place. And anyway I didn't say she was an "influence", because you're right that stylistically they're only very distantly related: what I said was that she "formed fundamental concepts", which is what a wizarding school for children is for Rowling.

SPOILER; if you listen to this video it may ruin some of the books for you, so if you wanto know the order you should read them in. ORDER TO READ HAINISH BOOKS 1] The Dispossessed 2]The Word for World is Forest 3]Rocannan's World 4]Planet of Exile 5]City of Illusions 6]The Left Hand of Darkness 7]Four Ways to Forgiveness I just finished them [as audiobooks] 'cept Rocannan's World which I couldn't find and wanto thank the person who made this so I knewhich order to read these. I think this is a fantastic universe and is a shame more people haven't read them

I just listened to The Dispossessed and am now trying to elucidate which one I should read next. I don't care if she says they're not essentially linked, I would listen to this whole vid but I am worried you are going to blow it for me. What bites is someone uloaded the audiobook, the left hand of Darkness and there is no sound!

I wanto thank you for making this vid. I gave in and peeked and will now be listening to THE WORD FOR WORLDS IS FORESTS. I was kinda worried you might ruin it, but as of 3:08 you haven't. Thanks.

3:32 ... On to Rocannon's World. Enjoyed WFWF, buthink, like the Dispossessed it is too short.
@jackjensen4224 жыл бұрын
Am just now seeing these comments: I'm glad that you liked my video and I hope you've been enjoying LeGuin's books! The World For World Is Forest is considered a novella and is quite short indeed... The Dispossessed is also pretty short, but if you want to revisit that world there's a short story called "The Day Before The Revolution" that you should check out!

Shaky at first, redeems itself short after and boosts much needed morale for the genre or Hainish Cycle(Span repeat, not Bike sort of) Saga. Recent one and mostly also a good thing to have that series thrive towards future wrap around with new ideas approach on the topic. Glad it is surviving and well presented for the rest of the video. Good fellow explain clear and one to remember.

Extremely well thought out timeline presented really helped me appreciate the Cycle even more. Having read most of it long ago I am doing well at an avowed reread mostly on audiobooks. Thus, I really appreciate all the books, stories and all the other tasty things that people have invested their time to upload! Deciding now rather to read RW or COI next. Thanx again to all and to KZbin, easily the best all around app in cyberspace!
@jackjensen4227 жыл бұрын
Mike Garber yeah, I've been working my way back through the audiobooks. RW is great as a standalone book, and COI is great as a sibling to POE. So, that's the closest I'd come to a recommendation between them
