I remember this from my early childhood in the 70s when I lived in South London.

This was one of my Grandma's favourite songs. It reminded her of the time when they moved house. Apparently, my Grandpa got hold of a horse drawn cart for the five mile journey. Their possessions were piled on. The children squeezed into nooks and crannies - I believe my uncle, just a baby, was popped into the Dolly Tub (used for washing clothes). There was no room for my Grandma, so she made her own way on foot out of town to the village where they had a bran-new house. She didn't have a Cock Linnet, nor lose her way, but at least when she got home, the fire was going in the Workwell Range, and the stew pot was beginning to bubble with that evening meal. That stew pot first bubbled the day after they married, and continued having ingredients added until the 1950s! My Grandma's journey took place in 1926, and I'm still living in the house...hopefully I'll be able to celebrate my family's 100 years in the house.

If nobody else is going to say this I will. Due to the BBC being woke the original lyrics "you can`t trust a Special like the old time coppers" were substituted so as not to offend those delicate flowers Special Constables everywhere. As a Cockney myself, having been born and brought up in Bow, I have to say this typical reworking of the past by the BBC would be pathetic if it wasn`t so dangerous.
@Knappa224 ай бұрын
Talk about complete paranoia. To start with this clip is 17 years old, so hardly the period of so-called ‘woke’. Also the last line of the song has always had many variations e.g “I stopped on the way to have me old half quarten, now I can't find my way home.” There are many more. People in this country have gone crackers. They see every thing that isn’t *exactly* how they want or remember as some sort of attack.
@raymondbone47104 ай бұрын
The BBC has been woke for at least 20 years. Take the One Show as an example first broadcast in 2006. A policy decision was taken to only have regional white plus non white presenters. The only white Southern male who is allowed in is Gyles Brandreth.
@Knappa224 ай бұрын
@@raymondbone4710 what so having, say, a Welsh presenter is now ‘woke’? You’re far gone down the rabbit hole mate.

She was also incredibly generous giving away her money almost before she'd earned it and that is also why she was so loved particularly by East Enders.

Marie Lloyd, was a true star, we shall never see her like again, no microphones etc back then, just projecting your voice, i think the love and affection she gave to so many showed when thousands lined the streets to see the funeral car go by.

When the king made the royal variety show, they didn't invite the real star of London at that time,. . All linked to real pubs and the entertainment that was given..😓🎬🇬🇧💯🙏 lucky to remember they don't like that?🤬 Cat look's great always wanted to see what she did with it🥇😉 Eastend girl? I love this, but I think had I been the costume designer I would have done it differently. As part of the bigger joke I think I would have dressed Marie up as a duchess and the other singers as clowns who are house-moving laborers.

Political correctness has actually pervade old songs. The final lyrics have been changed , it was originally, " You can't trust a Special like the old time Copper , when you can't find your way home." And you have to be thick not to know the meaning of that.

Being Australian, I don't know the significance of the 'special' versus the 'old time coppers'; I know who the coppers are, of course - Mum always called them the Bobbies!

According to Wikipedia: 'The couple rush to fill up the van, and its tailboard, with their possessions, in case the landlord appears. When the van is packed up, however, there is no room left for the wife. The husband therefore instructs her to follow the van, which she does, carrying the pet bird. Unfortunately, en route, the wife loses her way after stopping at a pub for a drink. Thereafter, she reflects that it would be ill-advised to approach one of the volunteer policemen (a "special"), as they are less trustworthy than a regular police constable (a "copper") and might take advantage of her inebriation.'
