Great piece for a recital program! Simple, elegant, not too challenging but not too easy either. Vaughan Williams was like Vivaldi, he knew what was fun and what was easy on the violin and viola, moreso than his contemporaries for sure.

I believe Ethel's surname, "Smyth" was pronounced to rhyme with "wise" rather than "still." As for the "Andante" from the Piano Sonata in c# minor, I thought it was quite beautiful, a revelation in fact, at least to me. I think it sounds very much like Brahms, which is no crime, but personally I don't hear a great deal of Beethoven. After listening to this remarkable piece, I look forward to hearing more of Dame Ethel's music. I almost forgot: Bravo to Ms. Liang for her beautiful rendition of this piece on the piano!

Oh, wow! I have just discovered this as I'm looking at the life of William Dennis Browne for a small play. This is just simply wonderful, a joyous rendition of strength & restraint & emotion. Bravo to both Messrs Thomas & Burnside. I know the Bostridge very well and that too is glorious but this delivers a bigger punch. Splendid. Thank you!

This is my favorite version of this song both for the variety of instrumentation and for showing how much energy the music can have even though the words are so deeply sad!
