Did this with an angle grinder on a Savage. Twice. But Savage bolt handles are way easier and cheaper to replace if it goes wrong. Still working up my nerve to try it on my 700.

How well will that knob work in a soft rifle case? Much less a scabbard. Nice job installing the ugliest bolt knob I have ever seen.

Funny how when you go to a technical school to learn to be a machinist, you just get chunks of steel, and make what they tell you. Then you hit the real world, and you have to be a jig making fool to get your work done.

As a complete stranger to lathe and mill work. That setup looked gnarly spinning on the lathe like that. At whatever rpm it was running at. Great job at the end of the day though.

Personally I've found the best knob to have is a smooth spherical knob like the old Mausers.

@Johnny-jr2lq

@@bBlaFWell if your keeping your brass that kinda shape makes it easier to run the bolt one handed. I can in a prone position cycle the action on my Bergera B14 eject the fired piece of brass into my hand place that brass back into my cartridge box and then push and new cartridge into battery in 1 fluid motion. Over all the bigger knobs just make doing that a bit easier and add a little bit of personal flair to the rifle.

Man, I got a basket case of rifle. It's a 1907 mfg 94 winchester that is kicking my butt. It's not deferred maintenance, but flood damage, and was sold to me with 80% of the parts missing, including all the wood, ugh.

Watch this clip in 25% speed. It is interesting to see the long recoil operation working. Seems to be one of the notorious 30-06 guns manufactured for the AEF.

At 70 years old, I still want a model 71. Think they are simply an example of production excellence, by Winchester. The recoil pad would be a no no for me but you did a really great clean-up on a highly respected rifle. Thanks for all the schooling.
