In your second practice .. what if that exponent was right beside the 5 inside the grouping symbol? (4 + 5 squared) - 6 x |-2| Would you have to do the exponent of 5 first before you did the grouping symbol?

In a way yes. The grouping symbol in that case is not indicating an operation in itself. It is only making a request to be done first, G. Once you identify what “group” to do first, then you must simplify exponents prior to adding. Hence, E before A.
