I ve just applied to a perfusion program at Quinnipiac University CT and I just came across this, searching online and trying to find information about the program. I’m excited to hopefully join this group of professionals. I’m currently a surgical technologist doing mostly orthopedic,spine surgery, general surgery, plastics and variety of other specialties.

Great discussion highlighting some logical physiological assumptions. However, look at the RCT evidence. That’s the key. Even big data sets with bias inbuilt doesn’t allow to know ‘what is best’. So much of practice is arbitrary. We must base our practice on evidence not a handful of cases or anecdotes when better evidence is available

If you're proning a patient with ARDS, I think it's TIME TO CONSIDER ECMO!!! If you're putting a patient on the Oscillator, or you are thinking about placing a patient onto the oscillator, YOU SHOULD CONSIDER ECMO!! I cannot stress this enough!! ECMO IS SOMETHING THAT SHOULD ALWAYS be considered in ARDS!

I think you should check the ECMO/CPB simulator from Biomed Simulation Inc! From what I've seen, it is VERY VERY VERY GOOD!

My daughter had neuroleptic malignant syndrome from Reglan. Her lips turned blue but her pO2 as measured by pulse oximeter was normal. She recovered for the most part, thank goodness. I've been interested in the topic of perfusion and hypoxia ever since. It sort of relates to my MSc research which was on dormancy / release from dormancy in a marine copepod in anoxic, H2S-laden sediment.

I don't know why. Why is it so few amount of thumbs? That was the brilliant hour, so interesting! Is the situation with the Mannitol is ossible for the oderm type of oxygenators? And what was the best option to label the lines when you are changing the ECMO contuor? Mark only the new lines? I so happy, that my first few years of work ere in the center with more expirienced colleagues, that way I had someone to help me with unusual situations. But real confidence and expirience I've got only after "downshift" to forein hospital, where I became the only one perfusionist in totaly new team. Looking back, seems there were the highest concentration of mistakes))) But the key is always to analyse! Do not start with the idea "that wasn't my failt", but try to find the rearon of some problem and the way how to prevent or solve it next time. Only our mistakes can improve us. And its better to share your mistakes with the colleagues for them not to repeat it! Thank you so much!
