I would renovate it. These old homes are too often treated like trash and thrown out. There is always a way to save them. They may not fit the modern lifestyle of openness, but they have charm that no new home does. I always opt for saving them.

It was a poor man’s house, therefore not much architectural detail, but you can salvage the simple fireplaces, a couple doors and some wood paneling to corporate, in your new house keeping a bit of the history.

I don't know the condition of the planks from that old barn, but from the video it looks like there was a lot of usable wood there... kind of a waste to burn all of that, particularly as there is a market for old wood from houses and barns.

I’d grab my bed and my pillow. Put a fire in that fire place. Move right in stabilize it as I go. It’s been standing. It’s gonna keep standing for some time. And other than the foundation and maybe some framing from the rocking it’s move in ready

This is a historic house. Other than the foundation it appears to have good bones. The wood walls and doors are gorgeous. And the floors are wood. No laminate could compare. Save the house.

Old house looks great l would restore it, preserving it as near to how it originally was. No l would not renovate it only change back, not change to some passing trends. It would be worth more than any new house and so much more satisfying. I love the old charm this house has. You cannot get that in a new home or any house that's not of the era this house was built.

I live in a house built as a single story school house in 1853 & moved & converted to a private home after a second floor was added at the turn of the century. My parents bought it in 1950. It’s charming but is uninsulated & should be gutted & new electric, plumbing & insulation installed. Better have a big budget, especially if you want to maintain the original mouldings & charm.

I would make sure it was sound and then move in ( rent your other house to get funds). Slowly slowly see how you used it and renovate only as absolutely needed. No major teardowns! Just each carefully considered repair.

With a lot of your own labor and the cost of materials you could renovate and it would be a BEAUTIFUL home. Check out some of these channels to get info...Restoration Nation, Farmhouse on Boone or Vernancular Farmhouse. Just type in farmhouse in search and you will have thousands of channels who have done this, Good luck.

I am no expert at renovation but it would be helpful to have an expert look at the foundation and structural integrity before making a decision. The wood paneling upstairs is beautiful. The house seems to have historic character. Figure out your budget after getting an expert opinion and make your decision based upon that.

I’ve seen several videos about people that go in and buy really old houses to “renovate“. Then they tear out the floors and replace all the floor joists and put in new floors. Then they tear out the walls and put in new plumbing and electrical and put up new walls. Then they put on a new roof. Then they go to work on the outside, putting in all new windows and trim elements. Then they want to call the place “renovated”. They’ve just taken it apart piece by piece and replaced everything. I do love the wooden walls. But you’d probably be better off doing a controlled demolish and rebuild, as it is basically what these other people have done. Save some of the prime elements and rebuild everything else, because most of the time it’s too far gone to repair and you have to rip it out and replace it anyway.

This house has so much potential. I would save the original part of the house and do a tear down of the kitchen add on. Save the lumber from the tear down for an out building or barn and try to carve out a kitchen area from the main original house. These old houses are true gems and you have the opportunity to be stewards to a great historical home if you just put a little TLC into it.

I love the old house but it will take lots of money to make it livable in the modern age. It needs to be plumbed, wired and insulated and that's after the foundation is fixed. It also most likely needs a new roof. You'll have to get a contractor out to evaluate the house.

I grew up in an 1880's farmhouse. This brought back memories. It's long gone and the property is now covered by strip mall petty businesses. I dream of that house. Please don't tear this one down. At least you could salvage that beautiful lumber, fittings, windows, doors, etc. There is still so much value there that maybe can't be calculated in terms of dollars and cents.

A lot of people are saying that separated room was for travelers, which is a cool bit of trivia I never knew. Makes a lot of sense! I wonder if it could also be for a farmhand -- someone who needed to live on the property, but stayed separate from the family. Not sure what you decided to do, but I'm hoping if it was to tear it down that you stripped the house of all the salvage possible.

Have the house jacked up. Put in new basements. You could turn the house around to face the road. Connect the two structures with a breezeway.

We did a 1900 house that was left to rot down in a field. EVERYBODY told us to burn it down! Looks similar to yours, we found out it had been turned around when they made a new road. It was chaotic to say the least but we weathered it….and it was awesome! So gorgeous! We ended up retiring and moving to Hawaii but it was worth every tear, sweat and blood.
