The game is not Lovecraftian. This is a veneer level analysis. The fishing hamlet, the great ones, and the unseen amygdala reveals are all stylistic, not thematic. I correct your assertion: to understand Bloodborne one must delve into the life and works of -Lovecraft- Joseph Lister, Robert Liston, James Y. Simpson, the brothers William and John Hunter, the body snatchers Burke and Hare, Robert Knox, and Robert Louis Stevenson. Bloodborne is an homage to the 19th century medical scene in Edinburgh and London. The game’s overall theme is about the horrors of surgery when the benefits of using ether and chloroform in hospitals was only newly discovered; and the horrors of that period’s anatomical research through the dissection of cadavers and where the bodies came from. One of the main taglines in the game is “grant us eyes” or “eyes on the inside” as a means of gaining some profound knowledge. It literally refers to the dissection of human cadavers, discovering the organs inside. All the game’s ’Great Ones’ are human body parts. The final boss in the true ending is a circulatory system, its face a cross-section of an umbilical cord, you devour umbilical cords to unlock it. William Hunter’s greatest work was on research on the development of the human foetus. He was accused of paying for cadavers of pregnant women who were stolen from their graves, and later, for pregnant women who were murdered for him to conduct his research. The game’s main story NPC is the pregnant Queen Yharnam, with her bloodied abdomen, mourning her crying newborn that never was. The game’s main BIG SECRET is the Orphan of Kos which is a foetus you fight after it literally crawls out of its dead mother. This is the great sin of the Byrgenwerth researchers. It is a retelling of the great sin of the real life William Hunter’s own research. Bloodborne is an homage to the real life horrors of the 19th Century medical scene in Edinburgh and London, with a veneer of Lovecraftian horror stylisation. If anyone is interested in more, read: The Butchering Art by Lindsey Fitzharris, and go watch videos on the KZbin channel ‘Charred Thermos’.

You can’t simply say Bloodborne isn’t Lovecraftian just because your interpretation isn’t. I love Charred Thermos’s videos and mostly agree with them, but they aren’t the only interpretations. There are many ways you can see the game as Lovecraftian. Don’t assume you’re the one with the best analysis lol, you just sound conceited.

@ could you link me to a video which you consider to be the best evidence for the Bloodborne/Lovecraft association? Or tell me what parts of the game relate to what Lovecraft story? I have his complete works here. We can chalk one up for Shadow Over Innsmouth to start.
@IvoryVer
@IvoryVer 7 күн бұрын
@@razmossis I think you’re missing my point, I’m not coming here to argue over interpretations of Bloodborne, nor am I here to waste my time sending you videos which you could very easily seek out yourself (but just so you can’t claim I’m not backing up my own points here, kzbin.info/www/bejne/o33GaKBtj5iVmLcsi=LokYN6B2ooTG0z2d, or this kzbin.info/www/bejne/hp3IZZmid9-ib5Isi=VezNCPUArDW7PHej). I simply think it’s stupid and sounds very high and mighty for you to claim that “this game is not Lovecraftian, this is a veneer level analysis”. Bloodborne is an extremely interpretable game, it very much can be interpreted as Lovecraftian in both theming and style. Just to be clear however, I’m not even saying I agree with the Lovecraftian interpretation of Bloodborne, I agree with parts of it but not all, and I genuinely enjoyed reading most of your comment, it was comprehensive and interesting, but it isn’t the be all, end all, of interpretations and it doesn’t mean Bloodborne isn’t Lovecraftian just because it isn’t a key aspect of your argument. Additionally, I don’t wanna make this reply way too long by going into Lovecraftian elements one by one, especially considering I’ve already linked videos, but just quickly, the quote “Might the cosmos be very near us, only just above our heads?” I read that and it screams Lovecraftian to me, the unknowable nature of the cosmos? The hunt for ascension? I think Bloodborne has clear Lovecraftian themes, but I’d never claim it doesn’t have a different theme just because it doesn’t fit into my interpretation, especially one with pretty substantial evidence backing it.

There are elements of Bloodborne that are woefully not showcased elsewhere and I dearly wish they were. The most prominent to me being the idea of illusions built upon illusions and delusions built upon delusions. It's quite carefully woven and masterfully unraveled throughout our journey as we see the foundations and faces of the institutions which oversee the society of Yharnam. Medical doctors, scholars, church members and more all assert an air being makers of miracles driven by keen minds, grand hearts, and the best of intentions. And yet in all these area's that unseemly side is revealed, one vein cut open at a time. Morality, spirtuality, humanity, and just plain common sense are failed in each and every one of these area's as these miserable monsters experiment in the most cruelest and inhumane ways possible upon any and everyone they see fit to, and in the grand scheme of things, the irony is that they do it to seek greatness, to elevate and become as the great one's are. And yet the ignorance in their acts, the barbarity of their methods is no grander or elevated than the beasts they ultimately become. All seeking power like primal creatures, wanting greatness without understanding it let alone understanding themselves, the human species. The ignorance and arrogance hidden behind these fronts is....astounding. And the kicker here is that I feel much of Bloodborne is thematic and symbolic idea's of this being orphaned, abandoned. In every way so many are left behind or cut off, with humans trying themselves to, well, abandon themselves. Even the transformation ending feels as if we are being abandoned because the secret of that existence is impossible to understand, how could we? The only thing more ironic than all this is the fact Sony abandoned the game itself.

There's no reason to make Bloodborne 2. The lore, the game is finished to perfection, and true fans know that. All it needs is a remaster. Miyazaki said that he's interested in the remaster, but Sony owns the IP, and they don't give a shit about the game.

Forcing sequels just because the consumer demand exists is part of the reason hollywood and AAA games are so cringe recently. It's also a good formula for failure. Nothing named Bloodborne is ever going to live up to the hype left behind by the original. It can only serve to disappoint and tarnish the name of the original, an artistic masterpiece. A careful remaster? Sure. Part 2 is a big hell no. Leave it alone.

We don’t need nor do true fans want a Bloodborne 2. I agree with those who say we need a similar style of game, but not a sequel. Let the main game rest in peace. Miyazaki knew what he was doing when he made only 1 Bloodborne, same reason why he compressed the original 2 DLCs into 1, the Old Hunters, because the story was told better that way

Lovecraftian can be used as an adjective to refer to cosmic and eldritch horror. Like Shakespearean can be used to refer to drama and tragedy. They are both nouns to refer to the authors works, but they’re also adjectives to refer to works that evoke that authors spirit/vibe.

Bloodborne always made me feel like the devs really made a passion project whereas dark souls and Elden ring, while fun games were made to drive sales. Man, I get flamed a lot by the new fromsoft fans for that take so very often. Bloodborne is a superior game with substantially less content. Getting rid of the shield was a genius idea because it makes the gameplay way more fluid and fun to play. The combat shit all over elden ring with like 1/100th of the weapons available in game. Bloodborne and sekiro are the two best games fromsoft has made and it's not close.

No Defeats the entire purpose of Bloodborne and its lore as well it being filled with eldritch horror lore filling the gaps on those to answer questions is something that goes against the very nature of lovecraftian influences with its storytelling. Idk man just makes me feel like you don’t really understand Bloodborne to be asking for a sequel or prequel where it’s not needed in the slightest. Also Miyazaki doesn’t really like sequels he would rather do a standalone game.
