What scale length are you going with? It might be looking off to you because the bridge sits rather far up on the body, which probably gives you the illusion that the body is too long as there is a lot of space behind the bridge. Also, you could round out the shoulder increasing its radius so that it meets the neck at its centreline instead of to that far right.
@peachmelba10003 күн бұрын
That neck, which is one of three dimensionally identical necks I'm making rn, has a scale length of 25". I suspect you are correct about the scale length thing. I have two pre-made fretboards, both for 26" scale lengths that I think will be more appropriate. In the game of making these things look "right" even an inch or less can make a huge visual difference. I even have a seven string neck I made a while ago...

Make the top left side smaller and round it right into the neck. Add more of a point on the top right and cut it so you can use the extra high notes. The shredders cut its best for the back part. The rest looks awesome
@peachmelba10005 күн бұрын
Thanks for the input. I agree with you about the upper fret access. The idea of simply installing the neck so that it sits farther "north" may remedy that issue, and I've also looked at reducing the size of the shoulder, as you suggest. I may make a paper mock-up template today to test those changes. Keep an eye out.

.. i do that. Route weight relief pockets into the body ...along with wire Chase when I'm on the 2nd layer of body wood. Then i glue on the top layer and. Route out control cavity from the back. I don't like pickplates. So. None of them on my Builds. But i do use 2 ply wood veneer on the face of body to tie it all together. Then if possible. I buy quilt Maple veneer. And saple backer veneer and use that on top after the plain Maple 2 ply veneer .. but weight relief is a must in My builds because the Body is 17" across the "V" bottom. And 22" long. So. Most of my Guitars are about 8 lbs. With Floyd Rose trem with oversized brass block. And metal jackplate and .. well. Im lucky i can keep the weight down. ..

Well. Ash is probably ok for a neck. Depending on how thick and long you make it. But. Heck. I really only like Maple necks. I have. 2. Or 3 mahogany necks. But im partial to Maple. Especially a wide thin. Ibanez Wizard neck.... just my preference. Doug fir for the body?!? Well. I guess trial and error is the best way to find out if it works how you want it to react. , Sound, resonate... I use 3 Layers. . poplar. Cedar. And poplar. Because they're available in Lowe's. And ive found out that the way i build my body's. They resonate Really good. Better yhan a Stratocaster. But body shape also had something to do with it. An ML body had a LOT of Surface to resonate. Honestly. I would be at a loss trying any other Guitars. Ive made Explorer shales in the beginning. But switched to ML shape 7 yrs ago i had made a hollow body. Blaghhh. Sux.. and a double neck. Blahhh. Doesn't suc as bad as the hollow body.. but out of the 9 or 10 ML shape. And Stealth ML shape Guitar's ive Built. 6 or 7 are Excellent players

ps, I don't think this is boring to watch man, I like to hear peoples thoughts. We all know how to make guitars, how many times can you watch someone drill/sand/glue? it's in peoples ideas that things are interesting.
@peachmelba1000 Жыл бұрын
I've abandoned the idea of using that fretboard on this build. I may use it as part of a travel guitar I plan gift to a friend of mine. For the main build, it'll be a flat scoop Fender style headstock. I plan on building it out with wings. I have to do some very careful measuring first to ensure there is adequate material. Additionally, I've taken to blacking out the face of the headstocks on my guitars now, so any obvious glue lines won't be visible from the front. I have wenge and flame maple fretbaords ready to go from last summer so that decision remains to be made. Thanks for the comments and interest.

That’s a really interesting concept, I like the design! I think you have 3 really good contrasting woods there too. As for the scale length I’d go with whatever you’re most comfortable playing, if that means extending the body back 1/2 inch that’s the best option imo. I’d rather change the design to suit the player than the other way round. Good luck, I’ll be sure to follow this one! 👍
@peachmelba10002 жыл бұрын
As it turns out, the new body template is also about .5" longer than the previous one, and in addition, I may join the neck to the body at the 22nd fret as opposed to the 20th, to get the SG style upper fret access. I don't think a scale length change is required after all.

With the understanding that I got lucky with the cost of materials on this one, here is what I would estimate for the overall cost under normal circumstances: Body woods: $150-$200 Neck wood blank (flame maple 30"x 1"x 4"): $150-$200 Hardware and electronics: $500
