Great insight into a magical venue. What time of year was this? If it helps ....would be good to know a bit more about the technicals eg the weight and length of rods, type and weight of fly lines , what rigs, bit more about flies used. Did you stick with those same lines throughout. Any problems with boat drift. Did you use a drogue. If not why not. You are so experienced you might assume us new fly fishers know these things. You did mention some of this. And FishWales probably want a balance and nonbrand advertising I do understand. You two are superb presenters nice and calm. £60 its amazing vfm. Chunky wild brownies. Gorgeous setting. Spa for the missus. Whats not to love. Thank you.

do you need to pay for tickets/have a membership to fly fish on the wye? if so how can you find beats to fish on? had no luck so far.
@FishingInWales6 күн бұрын
For this beat, you will need to get the day ticket ticket in Conti's newsagents in the town. For other beats on the Wye, have a look on the Fishing Passport site, which has a lot of great options for fly fishing: www.fishingpassport.co.uk/fishing/upper-wye

You are best getting in touch with Joe directly, and if you are down for 2 weeks it would be worth hiring his services for a shore day so you will know where to go safely.

A lump of Welsh coal. "You won't find that in your Christmas stocking." Not necessarily true... It used to be a great (now sadly forgotten) New Years Eve first footing tradition to take a lump of coal to your neighbour as a token of prosperity for the year ahead. In exchange for 'a wee deoch an doris'. I've done it very many times and some lumps (pre-mid 1970's) must have been Welsh. Is that close enough?

Wales has over 100 angling clubs which have game fishing, 500 plus mountain lakes, fisheries and reservoirs that hold trout, over 2000 km of trout, grayling, salmon, and sea trout rivers. The majority of Welsh freshwater venues are game oriented.

I do think it# unfair, that locals get massive discounts to others that are out of the area . I’m welsh, and I think that I should be able to fish waters at the same price as others, it’s very discriminatory in many ways..

I bet you have a treasure trove of knowledge from all the years fishing the rivers and coves of our beautiful country. Been taking my 9yr old boy around some of my favourite beats this season scouting for big browns and weve had a very successful season so far. Its either the Towy or the Tawe tomorrow if the weather is okay. Hope to keep the success going as we search for that once in a lifetime trophy fish. Im just happy to have my son out in nature in the wonderful fresh air instead of infront of a bloody computer screen. He is a super keen young fisherman and is progressing at lightning pace. Teaching him all ive learnt myself over the years. He's inherited that competitive edge that i possess so we always have a little comp between ourselves which adds to the fun of it all. We are so spoiled here in Wales for unspoilt natural beauty and thats one of the most enjoyable parts of fishing in Wales. Thanks for the tips from Taff in Carmarthenshire 😊

If it’s hard to get down to fish it’s usually less fished , places to get down easy are usually battered with less fish. It’s like wreck fishing on an unmarked wreck , it’s a gold mine with big fish . Soon as it’s known people over fish it and takes years to bring stocks back up if it does recover , most times big fish never return back there .
@FishingInWales2 ай бұрын
Absolutely. We have hundreds of great marks in Wales, but if you do find a 'gold mine' keep it to yourself.

@@FishingInWales yeah i learned the hard way , I seen other guys blank time after time so out of empathy you let them on to a honey hole but say” keep it to yourself “ . Next week you go only to see them and 3 mates smashing in loads and they say “ I just turned up and these came after me “ .

I came up with the Three Lakes Challenge many years ago in North Wales which involved walking to 3 of the highest lakes. Did it for a hospice charity and the media covered it. I toyed with whether I should make more of it and deliberately decided not to thinking that these waters are quite sensitive places and things should be low key. I love hiking and fly fishing for wild trout and have been doing it nearly 40 years (used to guide in N Wales etc). My main destinations now are in very wild parts of Scotland. I don't promote or name where I go. Still trekking up to very remote places but maybe a bit slower at 62. Tight Lines.

These are around St Davids head area. A lot of work goes into finding the access. Joe is available as a guide for that reason and importantly, for safety, as some marks should not be attempted on your own or without knowing the correct routes down.
