I'm late to the party. I was a drag racer that happened to show up only to watch one of these races. I was pissed off that this sh*t was stopping my regular street car drags. Damn you! ___ Now, I look back on this and laugh at my stupidity; not knowing how close we all were to losing the track all together. G@d da&m fuc*in' hippeys gonna shut down my track !!!!!. <---was me in 1987, and 2024. We need a place to race ! Damn ! See what has happened in cities with 'take overs' ? Motor heads need a place to race. In the streets or on a track...decide and vote.

Where do we get a high def version of this? "cleans every particle of grit from the huge 12" wide slicks" - ROFL!! I run 12" slicks on my street car nowadays! ha ha ha They're considered pretty small now.

I raced there in the 1970s. Had so much fun at the track. The only guy to beat me had a SBC Vega. Then we used to go to the unincorporated streets right next to the track to race for most of the night. There were new streets but no buildings yet. Even when Fremont PD showed up they never did anything because they were glad we weren't racing on Fremont boulevard. They would just check for alcohol and leave us to race. What a wonderful time. Cruising Niles and Fremont boulevard was so much fun.

Great footage!! Late 70s early 80s ?? I have Mac McCord’s 73-76 AA/FA under restoration, ‘ The Gorilla’ ! Surprisingly original less original paint and drive train ! Even the original upholstery , fire bottles, tin work , etc… Ready to have the valve covers engraved but have yet to find photos that show if they were engraved “ THE GORILLA “ or “ GORILLA “ , “ Gorilla “ ?? V cutter , ball mill ? Also , a photo of the gorilla head on the fuel tank ! Was there a standing gorilla on the fuel cap ? Anybody?? HELP APPRECIATED!!!!

I was 15 when the first pavement was layed down, 1959. The word soon spread and anyone with wheels could and did race old pickups with shovels etc. sticking up behind the cab as at first there were no fences, barriers etc., nada, only the new pavement. Soon after, "Fremont" opened and my old flathead Ford ran a 19.20 I think it was. A few years later while working at the near by GM Assembly Plant I bought and raced a black 427, A/S Ford with a best et of 12.48, 111.80 MPH. 21 trophys in all, of which five I took only the receipt and when I had 5 of the trophy receipts I could then put in my order for the coveted, "Fremont Drag Strip" jacket. Soon I was drafted into the Army in 1966..... That was a life time ago and I still have the jacket, the 427 fender flags and the original 427 FE Valve covers off the 1963 1/2, R-code, black factory hot rod, Galaxie fastback. And still hold dear all the memories of a time , long ago.....

Thru the 60's, 70's and early 80's Fremont drags was THE place to be for great racing. So exciting to see the famous top-fuel dragsters, funny cars, stocks etc. In '68 the jet cars blew our minds!. I moved to Placerville decades ago. Hangtown race track is a huge blast. Sprints, etc. Blessings to all fellow race fans

I had a neighbor in Reno who built a national-level top fuel drag boat. It had a solid aluminum Keith Black block. When the boat was finished, he rolled it out into the parking lot and fired it up. Words cannot describe but it did feel like the world was coming to an end. I've always been curious about, and had the highest respect, Keith Black and Keith Black engines.

Thank you for posting your footage. I made the last drag race here, as we had moved from LA to Santa Rosa (45 miles north of San Francisco) in 1986. And while living in LA (58' to 72'), I had the pleasure of attending races at Irwindale, Lions, OCIR, Pomona, Bakersfield and Ontario Motor Speedway. I feel so fortunate to have seen what some call the "Glory Days" of drag racing, and have been racing myself, since being licensed in 74'. ✌😎
