Every band Bowie had backing him was great-this one was PHENOMENAL!

Not sure I'd ever heard the original album version. The remix is really a testament to Trent Reznor's talent as a producer.

The VI was the only version I knew. I think it is the stronger of the two. I remember thinking at the time that reaction to it was rather muted, that it should have hit bigger. I don’t remember much radio play or any discussion. Was I living under a rock?
@burningmidnightamp12 күн бұрын
I remember it took a long time before I saw the video for the first time. Could possibly have been a couple of years after. Those kind of things was hard in those pre-KZbin days :D On the other hand it did stay 16 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching 66. That doesn't make it a great chart hit by any means, but still the biggest chart success Bowie had in the US between 1987 and 2015. It probably still went under the radar for many people.
@mattleppard197012 күн бұрын
Here in the UK it had almost no impact, but it was/is a cult hit in the States, I believe, and it was a popular live song over there way after this album. IIRC

@@mattleppard1970 And it didn't help that the single was only officially released in the States.

@ Didn’t know that! It also explains a lot. Thanks 😊 Just watching the discussion now. The album is sadly overlooked for more classic fare.

Nice! This album was so refreshing when it came out. I still think it’s among his best-ever work. Such creativity - a high-water mark that I can listen to on repeat now. He used the technique of cutting up newspaper headlines and construting new somewhat-random sentences on this. There are many songs different to this and Little Wonder on there. It’s all good Subscribed

Was she never there? Was she ever? Was it air she breathed? At the wrong time Oh-oh Oh-oh Oh-oh Oh-oh All the flowers so From the gallery With the hymns of night Singing "Come to Me" At the wrong time On the wrong day All the lights are fading now If I'm dreaming all my life Just one living chance When the mother sighs When the father steps aside At the wrong time Oh-oh Oh-oh Was she never here? Was she ever? Was it air she breathed? At the wrong time On the wrong day All the lights are fading now If I'm dreaming all my life If I'm dreaming all my life Was she ever Was she ever here? If I'm dreaming all my life If I'm dreaming all my life away? 100% This album is still fresh and crisp with creativity. It blew me away at first listen and I consider it up there with Blackstar. One of his most impressive works. Gabrels and co also elevate it even more. Listening to this one yet again right now still totally blows me away. But then again, I am a Tin Machine fan 😂

The Man With A Child In His Eyes- Kate Bush. That is what it reminded me of. Whippings has a Velvet Underground feel musically as well. I prefer the original version by far. One last thing....Indiscreet would be a good classic Sparks album to review.
