Hey, NWR1991. Since you did so good at filming Australian videos, including the one with the Flying Scotsman from Mobile Australia, why don't you try filming this video next (Steam Alive in Victoria). I've got both of those tapes in my home media collection at my house. By the way, do you know any of the soundtracks for this video? I'm sure we all do know the A-Train theme.

Nice tribute. If you will indulge me, I offer a few comments: At 1:22, that was the Enlisted Pool they were pouring. It was behind Barracks 2, of the four WWII "temporary" barracks that were built. The only one that was still in good condition was Barracks 4, because that was the Marine Barracks. As a Pipeliner, I lived in one of the quads in Barracks 2, and even ice skated on the pool when it was frozen. Swam there many times in the late 70's, before they closed it and we were allowed to use the O Pool. 3:57 You mentioned that RATCEN was established in 1951, but technically it was RESASWTACSCHL, or RASWTAC for short. It didn't become NAVAIRESASWTRACEN, or RATCEN for short, until the early 80's. 19:20 I knew there'd be a picture with The Grinch, aka Mike Gensch! 19:27 I have a copy of this photo, and what makes it so significant is that in that one shot are The Blue Angels, The Thunderbirds, and the RCAF Snowbirds. I don't know of any other air show where all three teams performed. Someone else mentioned already about Hall & Oates performing at NAS WILGRO first. Now, for my brief bio at NAS WG: June 1975 - Arrived at Recruiting with my recruiter because I was an AW striker. Grew up in NE Philly, and until that day, I never knew there was a Naval Air Station there! Dec 23, 1975 - Arrived for TEMDUINS at RESASWTACSCHL in the AW Pipeline. Released from ACDUTRA (I was a 4 x 10) and attached as Selected Air Reservist (SAR, later the name was changed to SELRES), performed one Drill Weekend with VP-66 in March 1976. April 6, 1976 - Application for TAR Program approved, ordered to NAS Willow Grove as a stationkeeper. Primary duties at VP-SRU, Hangar 20, above Engine Build-Up (EBU). We were later moved into the condemned NEX warehouse adjacent to the water tower, next to Recruiting. Eventually, we wound up in the new VP Hangar. After 3 years of enjoying 4-hour bounce flights in the Delta pattern and all the good work details, like Coop Cleaning, Gate Guard, Field Day Specialist, asbestos cleanup without PPE (what did we know back then?) and voluntary tours on Color Guard/Funeral Detail, I headed off to a new duty station, only to return in July1983 as Instructor at RATCEN. Back to PAC in 89, and once more returning to Home Base for a twilight tour at VP-66, retiring with my YNCS wife, Nancy, in 1995. Lots and lots of memories of people, events, and experiences at Willow Grove, most of them wonderful, and the bad ones all fade away. And hey, Merrill! Why isn't the VP-66 insignia on the final graphic? Or are you guys trying to forget that place? BTW - Has anyone ever wondered why it was called NAS Willow Grove, when it sits in Horsham? Answer: When the station opened, Willow Grove was the nearest town (3.3 miles away). How time has changed that!

Such a tragedy that the gov’t shut down places like Willow Grove and NAS Glenview. I’m sure there were reasons but the recruiting draw for inter-city kids for both locations was tremendous. Now the DoD has recruitment issues. A lot of bases are situated in remote / desert areas, which draws a lot less interest. There’s other issues right now, but fly-bys for athletic games and such cannot feasibly draw the same interests as sustained community presence…

I grew up in Warminster ‘81-‘96 and have so many memories being on this Base as a brat. The softball games, the air shows, the drone of the P-3’s, the screech of the A-4’s and -37’s, the whine of the Hogs, and the thump of the 53’s. Such great noise. I was left with an utter fascination with aviation that never ends, all thanks to the Grove. I later worked for MWR 96-98 cutting the grass on my summers home from Penn State. Pops was a chief on base before he retired in 87. Thanks for putting this together.

Later they have the T class lose front bogie wheels calling it a 2-8-0. I think a long list of mistakes could be made. An early vid surpassed by many recently made vids to higher standards by people more involved in railway preservation.

What cost $480,000 in 1942 would cost $6,533,182 in 2011. I attended the Young Marines program at the base, didn't know it was there as long as the picture looks dated. YM moved back there after it was off base in the early 2000's. My late mother and babysitter worked at the base as well. One as a civilian and other as a mechanic. What was once the base now only exists in memory.

I worked on the production of this video, I did some of the shooting and much of the boom microphone work. I also sat in on some of the editing. It was mostly shot on 3/4" BVU with a little bit on S-VHS if I recall correctly. All edited on modified low band 3/4" U-Matic editors that were converted to BVU by Greg Naylor. All titles were produced on a Commodore Amiga and superimposed using a genlock unit made specifically for the Amiga and video production. The tracking shots keeping pace with the locos was me hanging out the side of a Mitsubishi van hanging on for dear life. Loads of fun for an eighteen year old. I shot some of the station stuff too. The camera used mostly was a Sony BVP-3 three tube broadcast camera with BVU portable recorder and the S-VHS was an early Panasonic 3CCD broadcast camera with a docked recorder for those that like details. I have a different copy of this video that was given to me by Greg Naylor with whom I worked closely at the time. The only real difference is the credits. He was the producer, shot most of it and edited it all. All of it was edited at Greg's home facility in Coombs Road Kinglake West. Greg was a close friend until we had a falling out, have not spoken since. Sad shame.

This was a favourite of mine from my own childhood here in England in the '90s, and I had quite a plenty of railway videos in my youth, alongside animation, that my parents bought for my viewing pleasure. Quite an interesting twist to have the opportunity to comment direct to someone who was involved in its original making. The result and presentation really shows even after all these years. Well done my friend. Regards, Samuel Farris.

borekfk I hear you. I am saddened that all of the A4's or most of them either went to the bone yard, or will be used as drones to be destroyed. That goes for all jets no longer in service. Such a shame, since they are still operational. The F4's also from Maguire Air Force Base. Lot of memories hearing these scream, and running outside to see them. I see no jets at all now. So sad. Sometimes I see F16's on 911 anniversary day either flying towards New York, or as last year Philadelphia. I look foreword to that day to finally see jets, and hear some noise. Unfortunately they fly too high to really hear the ground shake. Changes in life happen. It's to be expected.

@bobsloan8349 7 жыл бұрын
borekfk Yes I certainly understand you completely. It is getting so built up around here, I guess these bases had to go eventually. I was at an Air show at Warminster when I and my sister were very young children. The Blue Angel F4 Fantoms were there that year. That was in the 1960's. They were loud and used afterburners when the group went by the spectators. Nothing like today. The F18's solo pilots push it, but not the main group as much. I grew up in Somerton . When I was child I remember seeing the Blue Angeles going up above the trees of my neighborhood. If you went to the Comley school on Byberry Rd in the 1960's, I may know you. I never met or have seen a single person from that school since I left about 1971. If you are about 55, you may have been a classmate of mine.
