In 1974 Robert Caro wrote ‘The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York’ he was a outspoken critic of Robert Moses, calling him a racist and ‘Racist bridges’ built low to prevent buses from going to jones beach. After that book came out his reputation declined. Was he racist? I don’t know. But everyone takes this one book for face value as to his character. In the beginning of this documentary they mention Sunrise highway, an extension of the belt parkway that went though Long Island and connected to the meadowbrook parkway. Buses could and still travel on sunrise highway. And there are bus schedules from the 1920 and 30 getting to jones beach from the city. African America were not the only ethnicity that lived in NYC and they certainly weren’t the only poor people living in the city that used busses ! An architect said the design of the low bridges was strictly cost. Long Island is flat and they had to create bridges. Mr Moses was the primary architect of the New York Parkway system (way to the parks) His designs, the Belt parkway (Brooklyn and Queens) the Grand Central Parkway, Northern and Southern Parkway as well as Bronx river pkwy Hutchinson Pkwy Pelham pkwy. These parkways in the Bronx are built exactly the same as the ones leading to Jones beach! Low bridges, so his intention was to keep ALL busses out of upstate and Long Island? He was very shrewd. Maybe that was his intention. But i strongly doubt these designs were to keep African Americans out of the suburbs, maybe? The Cross Bronx Expressway was conceived by Robert Moses and built between 1948 and 1972. It was the first highway built through a crowded urban environment in the United States. The Cross Bronx Expressway is blamed for worsening the decay of neighborhoods in the South Bronx, such as Tremont. In Robert Caro's The Power Broker, the author argues that Moses intentionally directed the expressway through this neighborhood, even though there was a more viable option only one block south (Wikipedia), so you think he was a little vindictive? The New York time reported in 2022 that the areas near the Cross Bronx Expressway were among New York City's poorest neighborhoods, most ethnic. If he was as racist as Mr Caro states, he ruined a thriving white neighborhood to create a ghetto?
